PS Plus Essential February 2024 – soapy shooter Foamstars headlines this month

Square Enix's brand new multiplayer shooter Foamstars is free this month for subscribers, and is joined by combo-based skate shooter Rollerdrome and PS5-only Soulslike Steelrising.

While PS Plus is usually pretty solid, it's extremely rare we get a brand-spanking new release arriving on the subscription day one, we've had a few notable ones like Rocket League, Fall Guys, and Bugsnax to name a few, but for the most part it's typically made up of games that have been out for a while. This month however, we have the newest multiplayer game trying to replicate Rocket League's PS Plus success story, Square Enix's soapy shooter Foamstars.

Foamstars is a 4v4 shooter that on first glance is quite evocative of Nintendo's Splatoon series. And while there are some direct Splatoon comparisons to be made – such as the two opposing sud colours that fill the map, and allow you to move faster on your own colour – Foamstars takes that concept and blends it into a different type of shooter. The main's game mode 'Smash the Star' is similar to the classic Gears of War mode Guardian in which you have to protect a randomly selected player from the opposing team, rather than just being a straight Team Deathmatch mode.

Rounding out the PS Plus Essential February 2024 free games lineup, as per the PlayStation Blog post, is skate shooter Rollerdome and steampunk Soulslike Steelrising – the latter coming exclusively to subscribers with a PS5. Both are great candidates for PS Plus in their own right, with Steelrising in particular sure to scratch that hardcore Action RPG itch as we continue to wait for Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree DLC to be released.

These titles will become available to download next Tuesday, February 6 and remain available to subscribers until Tuesday, March 5, which is when the next batch of PS Plus Essential titles will become available. This also means you only have until Tuesday, February 6 to download the PS Plus Essential January 2024 lineup which includes A Plague Tale: Requiem, Nobody Saves the World, and Evil West, as they will become unavailable once the new batch drops.
