Death in Paradise star confesses he 'totally lost it' during filming and 'tore off top'

Death in Paradise star Ben Miller revealed he once "totally lost his mind" while filming the BBC series.

The actor, 57, is known for his role as DI Richard Poole in the crime comedy series. Ben played the detective for series one and two and guest-starred in series three and 10. While filming the show on the French archipelago of Guadeloupe in the Lesser Antilles, Ben struggled with the heat.

His character was murdered at the beginning of the third season and he was replaced by Kris Marshall, who plays DI Humphrey Goodman. Ben reprised his role for a cameo appearance in a dream sequence for the tenth series a few years ago and recently revealed he struggled to deal with the hot weather while filming.

Ben explained: "I’m very bad with heat, between takes, I had to go and sit in a car, close the windows and put the air conditioning on full blast for ten minutes before I could go back. On one occasion, I was so hot that I totally lost my mind."

Speaking to Radio Times, the Bridgerton actor explained: "We were filming on the beach and I overheated, went mad, started screaming, ripped off all my clothes and ran into the sea. I can’t really believe it happened now, but it just seemed like the only answer at the time."

Ben Miller decided to leave the role in 2014 because he wanted to save his relationship - and he was about to become a father. "Two weeks after I arrived in the Caribbean, Jessica found out that she was pregnant," he revealed. "I've just got divorced and I've finally met somebody and now I'm on the other side of the world and we're having a baby. That's a proper curveball to be on the end of. So I knew what I had to do to get my wife back – quit Death in Paradise!"

The actor first rose to fame with Pointless host Alexander Armstrong in their comedy sketch show Armstrong and Miller. He went on to star in huge films and shows including Johnny English, Agatha Christie's Marple, Doc Martin, Upstart Crow, Primeval, and Paddington 2.

His biggest role had him take on Lord Featherington in the popular Netflix series Bridgerton. His character gambled all his family's money away and then won it back. However, it seems he won't be back for a second season as Featherington entered a room with some unsavoury characters before it was announced he had died.
