Dancing On Ice's Ryan Thomas holds back tears after mistakes in routine

Dancing On Ice star Ryan Thomas admitted that he nearly had an emotional wobble just moments before his performance after spotting his son in the audience.

Ryan, 39, who is a father of three, was the first celebrity to open the ITV show and took on the character of Willy Wonka. But his nerves were made worse after seeing his adorable son Roman sat in the audience also dressed as the family favourite character.

Speaking of his emotional wobble he told hosts Holly Willoughby and Stephen Mulhern: "I'm just glad it's over because it's been such a build up. I haven't seen the family all week and I saw Roman in the audience there and I nearly went. And just to get out there and do it..."

He continued: "The pressure gets to you in this show, it's really, really difficult." Standing next to his professional skating partner Amani Fancy, Ryan hugged her tightly as he thanked her for her incredible show of support. He added: "Thank you so much for always supporting me."

Ryan's performance was liked by the judges but they were forced to mark him down following a few mistakes and a stumble in the beginning of his routine. Ryan lost his footing when attempting a move. And when speaking about his performance, skating champion Christopher Dean, who scored him a 6.5, told him: "Ryan my finger was on the 7 but then the little mistakes, we have to take marks off when we see that. And then finish without the music."

But giving Ryan praise, he went on to say that he found his performance "mesmerising" and "more polished" than the week before but advised him to avoid "those mistakes." And Jane Torvill agreed when she said: "That little stumble early on put you off a little bit but in all of that you are doing more difficult steps and lifts so well done."

Ryan first shot to fame playing Jason Grimshaw on the ITV soap Coronation Street for 16 years. But the star has not only turned his back on acting to pursue other interests - he's also moved back to his home city of Manchester - marking a new chapter in his life.

Ryan had been living in Essex with fiance Lucy Mecklenburgh with their two children Roman and Lilah but he shared with fans last year that he'd finally made the move back to Manchester - bringing him close to his eldest daughter Scarlett who he shares with actress Tina O'Brien.

Taking to social media he posted a picture of him and Lucy with flatpack furniture in the background. He captioned the post saying: "Would of given up if it wasn't for this guy @jasua___bennett," which was accompanied by a red heart emoji. The pair posed behind a chest of drawers, which was the end of a three-hour assembly session.

In September last year, Ryan expressed his emotional anticipation in hosting his family in his new home for the first time. In a video filmed in his car, he shared with fans that he "thinks he'll cry" during the occasion. "Anyone who's done a house renovation knows the stress and struggle of doing it and the process to get there," he said. He added: "But it will be worth it when I'm sat around that table with all my family together. Actually, I think I'll cry. It'll be a special moment and that's when it'll be worth it."
