1. Madeira

The Portuguese island of Madeira is 1,000km south of Portugal, near the northeast coast of Africa. This means it's much warmer than most of Europe. With its stunning scenery and lovely beaches, this volcanic island is known for tasty seafood and, of course, Madeira wine.

If it's your first time visiting, Funchal, the coastal capital, is a great place to start. Explore the beautiful Monte Palace gardens, grab some food at the local market, Mercado dos Lavradores, then hop on the cable car for an amazing view of the town.

Tenerife, the largest of Spain's Canary Islands, is a paradise for walkers. With its dormant volcano, Mount Teide, and hundreds of miles of trails suitable for all abilities, it's a great spot for a winter walking holiday. You'll enjoy plenty of sunshine without the intense summer heat.

In Teide National Park, the Roques de Garcia trail is perfect for families or beginners. For more experienced hikers, the 3,715m climb up Mount Teide is a must-do. Stay overnight and start your climb before dawn to watch the sunrise from the summit.

Sicily, Italy's largest island, enjoys Mediterranean sunshine almost all year round. It's a haven for history buffs and foodies alike. The deep-fried arancini and cream-filled cannoli are local favourites.

The eight villages that makeup Val di Noto, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are home to some of Sicily's most stunning architecture. Rebuilt after a devastating earthquake in 1693, these baroque towns with their elegant churches and mosaic steps are perfect for winter exploration.

Malta, a tiny island just off the tip of Italy's 'boot', has much to offer despite its small size (just 122 square miles). Its capital city, Valletta, another UNESCO World Heritage site, is an excellent choice for a winter city break.

Don't forget to visit the stunning St John's Co-Cathedral, Upper Barrakka Gardens (which you can reach by a glass lift), and the trendy Merchant Street, filled with cool cafes, independent shops and a daily market.

5. Marrakech, Morocco

On the northern border of the Mediterranean sea, the vibrant and historic Morocco is a sensory delight and it's always sunny. The North African country's dazzling capital city Marrakech is a must-see for first-time visitors.
