Gail Porter was all smiles after buying her first wig, 20 years after losing her hair.

The 52-year-old has refused to cover up since her alopecia diagnosis, even though she accepts her decision has probably cost her a career on TV. The presenter has previously spoken out on social media about feeling 'insecure' about being bald so has decided to treat herself.

The star was first diagnosed in 2005 and has since lost all her hair, eyebrows and eyelashes. She has been vocal about her experience of the condition and has decided against wearing wigs in the past because it helps raise awareness of the condition. That is until now - and she has decided to splash out.

Gail told her fans the time had come and she showed off her new blonde look on Instagram. She wrote: "First wig ever!! Well, one that’s coming home with me and the cat! Made with so much love and care. Thank you so so much to everyone at @amberjeanshop. Adore my new hair!"

Pop legend Samantha Fox was quick to tell her pal "Finally Gail you found exactly what you’ve been looking for, and I can see why. You look stunning, but remember you are stunning with or without anyway, love Sammy." One of her fans agreed, adding: "You’re gorgeous without your hair and you’re gorgeous with it! Looking absolutely stunning."

As a result of her refusal to wear a hairpiece, she saw presenting work dry up after her initial diagnosis. Gail, who used to host shows including Top Of The Pops and The Big Breakfast, says the phone stopped ringing almost 20 years ago and that broke her heart.

In the past, Gail has opened up about losing her hair and how it made her feel on the Sacrifice and Success podcast: "My personality took a bit of a knock. Jobs just stopped, because you don't look the same. 'Would you wear a wig, would you mind wearing a wig?' No, I don't want to wear a wig. This is how it is."

It was a tough time for the one former model and she added on the show: "I was going through a divorce, no money coming in. So eventually I had nowhere to stay. It just went from bad to worse. "Things like, what do you do? Do I drink? I've got no clue whatsoever, I don't take drugs so…"

The TV star was later sectioned under the Mental Health Act in 2011 and admitted that she was motivated by her daughter to 'save her own life', as she later sought treatment. She explained: "I went to rehab for my depression, and self-harming, if I didn't have Honey I wouldn't be here. One hundred per cent. I would not be here. But I thought I could not do that to my daughter at all."
