A woman has been left mortified after ordering a dress from Zara that turned her into a "medieval peasant".

is a go-to for many fashion lovers around the globe; the retailer's clothes often go viral as people fight to get their hands on the latest trends and must-have pieces. But, fashionista Mel caused quite the reaction when she attempted to change up her wardrobe for the new year.

Mel thought a new dress that she ordered from the Zara website was initially "cute", but it made her look like she is "recovering from the bubonic plague".

Taking to her TikTok page @mel.is.s, shared a photograph of what the model looked like in the long, oversized gown. The website shows a short-haired model with dark eye make-up posing in a cream-coloured dress with a striped pattern and red edgings.

But when Mel excitably opened her package, she discovered the dress was not quite what she envisioned for changing up her look.

Making light out of the blunder, she put the "vintage" outfit on, as well as a headscarf, and danced around to a remix of Shakira's 'Hips Don't Lie' and a 'medieval' soundtrack. She also held an old-style candelabra as a gag.

The video raked in over 140,000 views and hundreds of comments as people revelled in Mel's humour. One individual said: "I tried it on months ago with such high hopes but it's giving medieval nightgown."

"I laughed so hard I legit weed a little," added another. One other joked: "I feel like I could rent a room with one bed for a night above your pub with my enemies to lovers supporting character in a 16th-century novel."

Some suggested Mel keeps the dress but adds a corset to make the ensemble more flattering. "At this point own it and add a corset," one wrote. "But styled with a corset could look bomb," another pointed out.

But others said they did not think the dress looked different from what Mel ordered. One said: "It gives medieval nightgown on the model too." "Not sure what you expected," added another.

"It is exactly as advertised," another TikTok user said.
