When you're in a relationship, if you're going to open it up to other people, you usually have a discussion beforehand to see whether it's something you're both comfortable with - but when one woman found out about her boyfriend's 'women' on the side, she was seething.

In 2021, during the pandemic, Aussie Rod - not his real name - decided to purchase a plastic doll as he'd not had any physical contact with a woman in over two years, and he was going through a period of intense loneliness.

He found venturing in to the world of online sex dolls "scary", but in October 2021, he decided to pay $3,000 (£2,366) for his very own life-sized "physical synthetic companion", and he named her Karina Luvly.

Rod, from New South Wales, told 7News that he soon began to feel the benefits of being with Karina, both physically and mentally. He said that he'd gone from having nothing, to something that needed "care and maintenance", and he was happy, sharing that it felt "nice."

But when Rod broke the news to his real-life partner a month after purchasing Karina, she wasn't very pleased with the turn of events - but he explained she was just "company" for him.

He said she felt "threatened" and was "wondering why" he needed a plastic companion. Rod had met his partner online just seven months earlier, but the pair had never met as she lived more than 3106 miles away.

Eventually, his partner "accepted" the fact that he had a sex doll because she realised how much she helped his mental health - and he then purchased another, named Lauren.

He also found a new hobby, getting into portrait photography, using the dolls as his muses. He shared that prior to making the Instagram account for Karina, he did not have a "big social network", but thanks to the dolls, he now has a supportive group of pals who are also sex doll owners.

Since, Rod even introduced his doll Karina to his mother, who "looked at her as if she was poison" at first, before accepting what a big part of his life she is now, and how much she's helped him with his mental health.

Thanks to the success of Karina's Instagram account, Rod has been offered a job taking photos of dolls for a manufacturer in China - and his partner has agreed she'll be by his side.
