Police have launched an investigation after a female tram passenger was bitten by another older woman who "wouldn't stop elbowing her."

An unnamed woman in her 50s sat next to an unnamed 26-year-old and began "elbowing and kicking her aggressively" for no reason, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed. The incident happened on a Manchester tram at around 4:15pm on Monday between the Hollinwood Metrolink Station stop and Rochdale Train Station.

Metrolink staff intervened and took the young woman to safety, but moments later the attacker lunged towards her and bit the victim's hand so hard she drew blood. The attacker fled at the next station before police were able to intervene, prompting them to release an image of a woman as they carry out investigations.

Officers are appealing to the public for any information and are looking to speak to the woman pictured as officers believe she may have further information regarding this incident. Information can be shared by calling 101 quoting log number 2329 of 15/01/24.
