A furious woman says the "UK is finished" after paying a "ridiculous" price for six items from Tesco.

It's no secret that the rising cost of living crisis continues to put huge pressure on people's purse strings. And shoppers are certainly feeling the pinch when doing their weekly food shop.

Official figures show that the cost of everyday supermarket staples have dramatically increased in the past four years. A 500g block of cheese has risen by £1.73 from the £3.48 it was in September, 2023. And the cost of eight sausages has leapt 90p from £2.26, while 10 rashers of bacon have increased 48p from £2.15.

In a bid to share the reality of shopping for groceries in the UK right now, one woman has fumed about spending £17 on six items in Tesco, the Daily Star reports.

The customer took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to show off her haul. The shop includes fresh salmon, an oil spray, chilli sauce, a bottle of soy sauce, Panko breadcrumbs, and a small bag of vegetables.

Posting under the handle @agnepon, the fed-up woman wrote: "£17 for this WITH a Clubcard. Country is finished oh my days." The tweet raked in over 1.4million views and many agreed with her stance.

"It's not cheaper to eat at home anymore," said one individual. Another said: "£17?! Excuse me?! What time is the chef coming yard to cook this for you? Because for £17 I am just going to a restaurant."

A third commented: "Things are just too expensive." Another X user wrote: "£17? I'm dead."

But, some commenters pointed out that the woman had picked "expensive" items, such as salmon and Panko breadcrumbs. They suggested she opts for cheaper alternatives in the future.

But another woman defended the Tesco shopper, and said: "The replies explaining how you could settle for worse quality/less convenience to save money and ignoring the excessive cost of living in a really sub-optimal society are the problem. Why are you so desperate to defend the uncontrolled profiteering that's rife in this country."

One other said: "Security tag on salmon... this is a third world country man." While another added: "It's the fact the salmon fillets are security protected."
