The Premier League season is more than halfway done and so far, the judgement has not made for pretty reading for Manchester United and Erik ten Hag.

Champions League qualification and a Carabao Cup win has been followed by whimpering out of Europe's premier competition and poor domestic form. Few have elevated their reputations at Old Trafford this season but the Red Devils have a number of players looking to improve their standing in the game away from the club.

The club do not have a long list of players out on loan but the likes of Brandon Williams, Alvaro Fernandez, Donny van de Beek, Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood will all be hoping to realise their aspirations.

Some have only just made a much-needed move while others have made their return. Mirror Football takes a look at how Manchester United's on-loan stars have got on so far this season.

Brandon Williams

The 23-year-old has already made 51 appearances for United and previously enjoyed a loan at Norwich City in 2021/22. This term has seen the full back move to promotion-chasing Ipswich Town.

The loanee made an good start as he worked his way into the side and scored an impressive goal versus Preston but has seen his progress stall due to illness and injury. The defender has only made three starts since November and this month has returned to Carrington to undergo medical assessment. There remains hope he will return to Portman Road for the remainder of the season.

Alvaro Fernandez

Having made the bench for Manchester United's August match with Nottingham Forest, Fernandez made the move on loan to Granada and has featured all down the left flank. The 20-year-old made 14 appearances for the Spanish side but has since been recalled ahead of another move.

Following his departure he said: "My stay in Granada was special, but not as long as we hoped. It was a real pleasure to represent this club and I will always be grateful to the fans and the club in general, but above all to the people who spend day to day with me taking care of me and supporting me since day one."

United utilised a break clause in their loan deal and the youngster is now primed to depart for Benfica. The deal will intially see a loan with the prospect of a permanent deal at the end of the season.

Donny van de Beek

Having featured for 21 minutes across two appearances under ten Hag this term, Van de Beek quickly made his Eintracht Frankfurt debut this past weekend following a January move. The midfielder started the Bundesliga clash against RB Leipzig and helped his team record a 1-0 win.

"It’s a big club. The way they want to play was also important to me," he said of his choice to join the Germans. "I had a good and positive conversation with the coach and how he sees the game. That convinced me, I have a good feeling about it. You have to follow that feeling."

Jadon Sancho

There have been few loan moves as anticipated as Sancho's following his public falling out with Ten Hag earlier this season. The England international had been without playing time since August ahead of his move to Borussia Dortmund.

It took little time for the winger to reacquaint himself with the Bundesliga as he came off the bench to provide an assist in a 3-0 win over Darmstadt. Der BVB chief Sebastien Kehl has already praised the attitude of the £73million signing since his return to the club.

He told : "I experience Jadon as changed, I experience him as more mature in his personality. He knows that he is challenged and that he is coming to Borussia Dortmund in a different role. He's always on time - even over-punctual. He seems incredibly motivated and committed and to see such a player on the pitch is fantastic. I think we'll have fewer problems than in the past."

Mason Greenwood

The forward has 18 months remaining on his Manchester United deal and has an uncertain future to say the least. The forward has scored five times for Getafe this term across 17 appearances since joining in the summer and recently won the club's December player of the month.

Having collected the prize, Greenwood told Getafe's YouTube channel: "Everything's fine. I adapted pretty quickly. Teammates took me under their wing and I’ve just been happy ever since, coming here and training, playing the games. I’m happy."

Will Fish

The 20-year-old centre-back is currently on loan at Hibernian for a second time and is a regular in the Scottish Premiership. Fish has already notched 28 appearances this season in the heart of defence and all parties appear content for the move to continue for the remainder of 2023/24.

Joe Hugill

The Durham-born striker has made Manchester United's first team squad twice this season but had most success in Premier League 2 for the under-21 side. The 20-year-old has bagged seven goals in nine appearances in the competition to earn a January move to Burton Albion. After quickly integrating himself into new surroundings, he was named on the Brewers' bench against Derby County, but came on to score during a dramatic 3-2 defeat.

Charlie McNeill

The forward joined Stevenage on a season-long loan at the start of 2023/24. The youngster scored on his debut for the League one side but has struggled for playing time sine then. According to the , McNeill is set to remain with the club for the rest of the season and could find first team training chances.
