Sunseekers who have bagged themselves a bargain break in the January travel sales could get their holiday off to an even better start with some cut-price luggage.

As big-name brands such as Samsonite, Antler and American Tourister continue to offer big discounts on suitcases in their seasonal sales, savvy travellers could save money on expensive cases and cabin bags. But for anyone who would rather spend money on Sangria than suitcases, we've found a cracking cut-price luggage set that could be just the ticket.

Available from Wowcher, the three-piece Diamond Hard Shell Luggage Suitcase Set has been reduced from £132 to just £59.99, offering plenty of packing power with its large, medium and cabin-size cases. Having already purchased these last year when they were on sale for £69, I think they are a brilliant bargain at their lowest-ever price.

The stylish-looking luggage collection is available in a choice of silver, black, rose gold or deep blue colourways and here's what I thought of mine when it arrived a few months ago.

Made from ABS construction with a 210 polyester inner lining, the three-piece luggage set included:

  • A 20-inch cabin case measuring 37cm x 22cm x 56cm
  • A 24-inch medium case measuring 43cm x 26cm x 65cm
  • A 28-inch large case measuring 49cm x 29cm x 75cm

Each case came with four spinner wheels for easy gliding movement, top and side handles, a coded lock that works with the zip pulls and a side mesh zip pocket for storing small items.

Armed with enough clothing and toiletries to see me through a two-week stay, I set about putting my new cases to the test while still on home soil.

The set looks super stylish

The cases arrive tucked inside one another, like a Russian doll of luggage perfection. Unpacking them they felt incredibly lightweight and while less is often more when it comes to airline restrictions, I wondered if in this instance the feather-light construction might make them feel flimsy and weak.

When full, they felt much more sturdy, giving me lots of space for my belongings without weighing me down.

Wheels

the wheels were pretty good

Considering the price, the wheels were pretty good

The four-spinner wheels rolled around fairly smoothly over both my wooden floor at home and my driveway. They felt much more capable when both the large and medium cases were loaded with my belongings, and while they may not quite offer the smooth rolling experience of a high-end suitcase, they did the job.

Exterior

I always find that hard-sided suitcases look brilliant before they hit the road, but become a little more scratched and dull with every journey. On that basis, I would expect to see some marks on these cases too, but I am hoping that the raised diamond design will make them much more difficult to see.

In terms of how hardy they are when faced with the knocks and bumps of an over-zealous luggage attendant, I did my best to throw them in and out of the car a couple of times and saw minimal scratches on all three sizes.

Interior

All three cases offered a good amount of storage space

While all three cases are indeed fully lined, it is not the silk-lined loveliness you see with some more expensive brands. That said, do I need to feel the smooth silk against my belongings, or just something to keep them neatly in place on the go?

All sizes come with luggage straps to keep everything held tightly in place and a zippered top compartment. While I did feel that the zips felt quite flimsy, there was plenty of space on both sides to fit all of my gear in.

Handles

As much as I have developed a soft spot for these brilliant bargain suitcases, there is one aspect that I am not at all keen on and that is the handles.

'My best buy suitcase is now just £59, it's a must-have if you're on a budget'I thought the handles felt quite flimsy

Right from the outset they felt wobbly and loose, and not strong enough to pull when full. Ironically, it is actually the cabin case that feels the most flimsy despite its smaller dimensions and I struggled to get this one to stay up as it kept slipping down.

I'm very much hoping they prove me wrong in this instance as the cases are nice. Here's hoping they surprise me and remain strong enough to hold up to pulling all my gear through numerous airports and across many hotel lounges.

Durability

While these cases do feel lightweight and potentially less durable than some more expensive rivals, they seem to be holding their own so far. I have packed them full of gear, thrown them about in the back of the car, lugged them down the driveway and even sat on the larger one myself to make sure it closed.

Will they be tough enough to handle international air travel? Who knows?

Buy cheap, buy twice?

I've tested incredible luggage in my time, and I've also had my fair share of overpriced pieces that certainly haven't been built to last.

While there are areas where the cost is reflected in the quality of these cases, like the flimsy feeling handles for example and the slightly bumpy wheels, in terms of storage space, design features and durability, this set of three suitcases really made me smile.
