Marilyn Monroe's death caused ripples in Hollywood

Marilyn Monroe made a heartbreaking final phone call to a close friend shortly before her life ended.

Actor Peter Lawford - who was married to Bobby Kennedy's sister Pat Lawford - claimed that he spoke to her on August 4 and invited her to dinner with them. He then claimed that when she didn't arrive he called her again and spoke to her and that her speech sounded "slurred" and she was sounding "despondent" about both her personal life and her career.

He said she then told him she was "tired and would not be coming" to dinner. He added that she became less audible as she added the final 18 words he would ever hear her say: "Say goodbye to Pat. Say goodbye to Jack [President Kennedy]. And say goodbye to yourself, because you're a nice guy."

A police report says that Peter admitted to having a "gut feeling" that something was not right and "he still blames himself for not going to her home himself." The Hollywood star was one of the most iconic names ever to live in Hollywood with her tragic death causing ripples around the world for decades to come.

While her career and death has been well documented, there is still a mystery surrounding just what happened when she passed away. Marilyn - real name Norma Jeane Mortenson - had already been suffering behind closed doors having spent time in a psychiatric clinic in 1961. She then passed away on August 4 1962 having been under the care of a doctor and a psychiatrist consistently at the time.

She was taking several prescription medications at the time provided for treatment of insomnia and her mental health. She had ultimately overdosed on the drugs causing her young life to be taken far too early. At the time of her death another of the last conversations she had was reportedly with her hairdresser Sydney Guilaroff. The conversation took place at around 9.30pm on August 4 with Marilyn allegedly having told Sydney that Bobby Kennedy had visited her at her home earlier that day and "threatened" her.

The allegation of the visit was however disputed by Attorney John Bates who advised reporters that the Attorney General had in fact been in Northern California with his family the whole weekend. Marilyn's death was ultimately ruled a "probable suicide." Questions have been raised many times over the years over the potential involvement of the Kennedy family in her death due to rumors that she was having an affair with both President John F. Kennedy and his brother, Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy.
