Marvel fans have said a gritty new series is the first “must-watch show“ of the year and is “unlike anything else” in the superhero franchise. Marvel Studios’ Echo premiered on streaming platforms on Wednesday (January 10) and has earned glowing reviews from viewers.

The latest instalment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been billed as a “grounded, gritty and action-packed drama” that centres on Maya Lopez, a deaf Native American anti-hero first introduced in the Hawkeye series. Following her ruthless behaviour in New York City during the 2021 Disney+ show, Maya gets her own series in which her past catches up with her in her Oklahoma hometown.

As the former leader of the Tracksuit Mafia gang, she is pursued by the hulking Wilson Fisk and his criminal empire. While forming part of the MCU’s Phase Five, Echo marks the first series under the franchise’s Marvel Spotlight banner, which will focus on grounded, character-driven stories and not be reliant on audiences’ understanding of the wider MCU.

It also marks the first MCU project to be rated TV-MA in the US – meaning it is unsuitable for children under 17 – due to some brutal fight scenes. Echo is fronted by American actress Alaqua Cox, whose portrayal of the Marvel character remains her only on-screen role.

The series also sees Vincent D’Onofrio reprise his role as Wilson Fisk – AKA the Kingpin – and the much-anticipated return of Charlie Cox as Daredevil. All five episodes of Echo premiered on Disney+ on Wednesday, marking the first Marvel Studios series to drop every episode at once.

It is available with a subscription to Disney+, which now costs as little as £4.99 a month. This includes the biggest and best Disney content including top Marvel and Star Wars films and shows, including the upcoming Agatha: Darkhold Diaries, The Acolyte and Skeleton Crew.

There’s no hidden cost with a Disney+ subscription and it can be cancelled any time, while customers can save by signing up to an annual subscription rather than paying monthly. Disney+ has also partnered with Samsung to give customers a free membership when buying eligible devices from a host of tech retailers.

Savvy shoppers can currently save hundreds in Currys’ New Year sale, which includes huge discounts on a range of high-spec Samsung smart TVs that come with six months of free Disney+, as well as up to three months of free Apple TV+. Bargain hunters can bag a whopping £400 discount on the 50" Smart 4K UHD Neo QLED TV with Bixby and Alexa, plus a further £100 off when using the code TV10 and up to £225 on selected sound bars.
