When it comes to honeymoons, most people instantly look to famously romantic destinations such as the Greek Islands, the Amalfi Coast or iconic cities from Paris to Venice.

However according to travel insiders at Sunsail there's one lesser-known Italian village that often gets overlooked, and is actually one of Europe's best honeymoon destinations for 2024.

Procida in Italy may not be hugely famous, but it rivals other Italian hotspots such as Positano and Cinque Terre which are famed for their colourful buildings. Sitting just off the coast of Naples, Procida looks like it's straight out of a storybook with its rainbow-painted buildings, clear azure waters and picturesque harbour.

Oh, and of course there are plenty of restaurants serving up some of that mouthwatering Italian cuisine, without the hiked up prices you can often face in tourist hotspots.

According to the Sunsail experts it boasts "stunning coastal views, hidden coves, and beautiful beaches", all of which are ideal for couples looking for picture-perfect backdrops for their first getaway as a married couple. For those who aren't fans of spending all day lazing in the sunshine, there's plenty to explore thanks to the region's historical sites and landmarks, such as the Terra Murata fortress. It's not surprising therefore to find out that Procida took the title of Italy's Capital of Culture back in 2022.

Although there are no direct flights from the UK to Procida, visiting is still fairly easy. The quickest route is to take a flight to Naples (EasyJet, Ryanair and British Airways all offer direct flights), and then hop on the ferry direct to Procida.

If you are considering a honeymoon, you may want to give yourself plenty of time to book. Katrina Lawson, Head of Brand and Acquisitions at Sunsail, suggests: "With May-September being ‘Wedding Season’ and it being recommended that you book your honeymoon between 6-9 months in advance, now is the time to be thinking about your dream honeymoon destination. We hope our recommendations provide inspiration for happy couples!"

According to Katrina, booking early could also help you snap up the best deals, as well as the best slots for activities and accommodation you may be eyeing up.

She also cautioned: "Think about the time of year you'll be travelling, as this can impact the destination's weather and crowd levels. Consider shoulder seasons for more affordable and less crowded options."

When booking a honeymoon, she also recommends checking the full terms and conditions, adding: "Determine your budget and stick to it. Be clear about what is included in your honeymoon package to avoid unexpected costs."

The good news is that right now there are heaps of great holiday deals to be snapped up in the January sales. If you're thinking about a summer break, then you may want to check out our top pick of some of the best summer holiday deals we think you'll want on your radar.
