A former New England Patriots player made an interesting comment about coach Bill Belichick and iconic quarterback Tom Brady, putting an end to the debate of who needed who more out of the legendary combination.

The 71-year-old head coach, who has won the Super Bowl eight times throughout his illustrious career, six with the AFC East franchise, is under pressure following the conclusion of another poor NFL season. To exacerbate matters, Belichick saw his team win just four regular season games, his worst career record.

His position as head coach is under threat, with some fans and members of the media believing it is perhaps time for his 24-year run in New England to come to an end. One of the main reasons for Belichick’s success with the Patriots was due to the performance and leadership of Brady.

The quarterback cemented himself as arguably the best player in the history of the game while playing in New England and helped elevate his teammates in the process. One of them is Danny Amendola, who played for the Patriots from 2013 to 2017 and won two Super Bowls.

In an upcoming Apple TV+ documentary titled ‘The Dynasty: New England Patriots’, the former wide receiver explained the difference in attitude towards Belichick and Brady, which sums up the quarterback’s importance to the team’s success. "We worked for Bill, but we played for Tom,” Amendola said in the documentary's trailer.

That quote perfectly encapsulates how the Patriots locker room at the time felt about both, and suggests a mutual respect for Belichick and a love for Brady. The Patriots were so wildly successful that players would have done anything for either man, but Amendola's comment does suggest a preference towards the legendary quarterback.

‘The Dynasty: New England Patriots’ will be available to stream on Apple TV+ on February 16, where fans can see a behind-the-scenes look at one of the most dominant teams in NFL history. The documentary is based on the bestselling book from Jeff Benedict.

Since Brady departed from the Patriots in 2019, coach Belichick has not attained the same success, and his future is currently the source of speculation ahead of the off-season.

He has reached the playoffs just once in the last four seasons and has lost 38 games in Brady’s absence while winning just 29. They ended this season with a 17-3 defeat to the New York Jets, who also struggled this year and finished just one place above the Patriots.

A failure to find an adequate replacement for Brady at quarterback which has negatively impacted the offense, in addition to the lack of development of draft picks such as Mac Jones, has contributed to the Patriots’ downfall. When asked about the prospect of leaving his post, coach Belichick says it is too soon for a decision to be made about his future.

"I'm under contract. I'm going to do what I always do," he told reporters on Monday morning. "As far as any decisions or direction for next year, way too early for that. I'm for whatever we collectively decide as an organisation is the best thing to help our football team," he said. "I'm here to work to help our team every day. That's what I'm going to do."
