'I never take decorations off my tree - sticking a nightie over it does the job'

A debate has been sparked concerning the 'best' way to take the Christmas tree down, and some people's methods are more shocking than others.

Taking the Christmas decorations down undoubtedly leaves your room feeling seriously empty, and it seems to take forever to remove each bauble and pack it away for next year. It can sometimes even feel like too much of a daunting task that people leave it until the very last minute, but superstition highlights that there's a day you should have taken them down. Taking to the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook group, many were discussing the best ways to take the decorations down - and some were weird and wonderful, yet very speedy.

One woman commented: "I pack mine away but my mother-in-law, who sadly is no longer with us, used to put an old night dress over the tops, baubles, bows and all and pop it in the loft as it was. Every Christmas she just had to take the nightdress off it."

Someone else penned: "My late father had plenty of room under the stairs so he left their tree up, complete with baubles, lights, and fairy on the top, and wrapped an old bedsheet around it. I found it the first Christmas after he died - unwrapped it and out it went. I did exactly the same with it until my mother died and we had to clear everything. Sadly I don't have the room to do this at home with the result that I don't always bother putting the tree up. Brilliant idea I think."

Others wrote that the way they did it was a lot more methodical, writing: "One of the pleasures of putting a real Christmas tree up each year is unwrapping the glass baubles and decorations carefully packed from the previous year and hanging them. Lovely memories are attached. All are packed in large boxes, labelled, and easy to see. They go up in the garage loft until next year. I also decorate the kitchen with a splashback board over the hob. This too gets packed away in black bin liners and labelled and in the same loft it goes."

'I don't want children staying up late at weekends - I really need adult time'

"All decorations are put away. Each bauble is wrapped in paper towels, three large boxes in all plus other boxes containing other decorations. Takes about half a day", someone very organised added.

Another shared: "I keep it up all year and redecorate through the year", and they showed a picture of their "winter tree." Someone else said they "don't do one", and another added: "Outside potted tree. No problem, I just take the lights and candy canes off."
