Nurse caught on job cameras stealing opioids and injecting herself with fentanyl
A nurse was sacked after being caught red-handed on CCTV, stealing opioids and injecting herself with fentanyl.
Alexis McNeilly, from Houston, Texas, was caught in the act by her stunned colleagues as they watched the surveillance footage, which captured the former hospital worker taking the opioids from an automatic dispenser by switching the drug vials with saline.
According to court documents, the videos, which took place over a period of months, even showcased the woman injecting herself with fentanyl while she should've been working.

The hospital worker was allegedly caught on CCTV (ABC13 Houston)After seemingly getting away with the alleged felony diversion of a controlled substance, which occurred between March and May 2023, suspicion began to arise when a Houston Methodist Hospital nurse noticed something was awry while conducting a 'routine' inventory check of the pyxis automatic dispensing cabinet pocket.

Subsequently, authorities have claimed the 25-year-old used the hospital version of a vending machine as a method of getting her hands on her own personal stash of hydromorphone and fentanyl. She is accused of "tampering with syringes and vials by removing the opioids and putting saline solution in their place." She would then return the syringes and vials to the cabinet pockets from which they came from.
On May 25, Houston cops were informed of the alleged crime reported by an FDA agent. Just five days later, Houston Methodist Hospital's pharmacy manager confirmed that a pyxis drug inventory audit led to the staggering surmise that McNeilly “dispensed medication that was not prescribed by the attending physician” and put “adulterated medicine […] in circulation” that had the “potential to be administered by other medical professionals to patients, unaware that the medicine had been tampered with.”
The former nurse claimed that she hears voices (ABC13 Houston)Documents explained: “Complainant Beck stated that the defendant was overriding the Pyxis machine to access the medicine that was not prescribed to the defendant’s patients. According to the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP), an ‘override is a process of bypassing the pharmacist’s review of a medication order to obtain a medication from the automatic dispensing cabinets when assessment of the patient indicates that a delay in therapy would harm the patient."
Upon reviewing the footage, the hospital's nursing director informed the police that when he confronted McNeilly over the video evidence, she supposedly claimed that she had accessed the drugs but threw the hydromorphone out rather than taking it.
The ex-nurse, who had bruises all over her arms, confessed to using hydromorphone off the clock, then made the startling revelation: “I hear voices telling me what to do."
The ex-nurse claimed that something similar happened at her previous job (ABC13 Houston)In August, the police contacted the sacked nurse in a bid to get her to make a statement. She called back two days later and discussed her controversial past at Baylor University Medical Centre.
The authorities asserted: “During the call, the defendant suggested that an incident like this occurred at her previous employer, and police were not involved. The defendant asked, ‘if police were involved this time because she admitted to it'."
Documents added: “When the defendant was confronted about this incident, the defendant admitted to taking meds but only the meds that were to be wasted from the cancelled overrides. She explained that she is under extreme personal stress and that she took the meds to help deal with her anxiety.
"The hospital had the defendant take a drug test. The drug test came back positive for Morphine, Hydromorphone and Marijuana.”
Court records confirm that the disgraced nurse was arrested on December 26 and later released on bond with conditions, including not to contact complaining witnesses, take drugs or own any deadly weapons. In addition, she is being electronically monitored, has to wear a drug patch and must stick to a 7 PM curfew, which ends at 7 AM the following morning.
