Emmerdale icon admits 'never say never' as they tease soap return after 22 years

Emmerdale icon Malandra Burrows teased the possible return to the long-running soap during her appearance on The Big Quiz: Coronation Street v Emmerdale last night.

The actress was best known for her role as Kathy Glover - who first appeared in 1985. Kathy was written out of the show in December 2001 when she was seen going to Australia with her niece, Alice Bates (Rachel Tolboys) when Alice's mum wanted her to move.

Malandra, 58, briefly reprised her role in 2005 when Kathy returned for the funeral of Seth Armstrong (played by Stan Richards). She was one of the central characters during her time on the show and storylines included getting kidnapped by a diamond-thieving lord, getting knocked down by a conman, getting trapped in the wreckage of a bus hit by a lorry and much more.

Last night, Malandra guest starred in The Big Quiz while fans at home got excited about seeing her on screens again. Three soap stars from each soap represented their shows and one round saw the contestants guess the former soap actress from a clue package that hid their face.

Team Emmerdale guessed the answer was Malandra, which saw the actress making a surprise appearance on set. Host Stephen Mulhern asked her: "When you look back at your time in Emmerdale - good memories?" to which she answered: "Oh a fabulous time. I wish I could say the same for the male actors that worked with me because they never survived, they all met untimely ends."

The host then asked if she would be returning to the soap. She said: "Never say never." Fans at home were excited and rushed to social media, with one user writing in all caps: "Bring back Malandra Burrows! Omg omg omg omg the one thing that could bring me back to Emmerdale."

Another user posted: "I'd love Malandra to return to #Emmerdale. And so would Emmerdale," while one fan added: "I miss Kathy in Emmerdale bring her back!"

Meanwhile, Malandra previously revealed she was diagnosed with breast cancer in February 2022 after finding a lump a month earlier. She said she chose to share her story to help raise awareness and encourage other women to get checked out.

Speaking to The Mirror, she explained: "I do not want to make this cancer my life. When I tell people they say to me, ‘I can’t believe you can talk about it and be so positive,’ but it’s the reality and you have to be positive. I hope in talking about it I can raise awareness.

"As well as the negatives there are the positives and that’s what you’ve got to focus on...You may think you’re super healthy, but that little ‘C’ word can still get you,” she says. “I just happened to catch myself [while exercising] and thought, ‘Good grief, what’s that?’”
