Shane MacGowan's wife pays heartbreaking tribute on first Christmas without him

Shane MacGowan's wife has admitted she doesn't know how she'll "get through this" as she faces her Christmas without her late husband.

Sharing a sweet photo of the couple when they were younger, Victoria Mary Clarke wrote on Instagram: "Today is really really hard much harder than I expected it to be. I just can’t stop crying and I want to be with him so much it physically hurts.

"I don’t know how people get through this but I do know that they do and people do feel joy even after they lose their person. Shane always said that even though he was born on Christmas Day he was much more focused on it being Jesus birthday and he felt like that was the most important thing about Christmas so I am asking for Jesus and the angels to help me today."

Shane died in November, weeks before his birthday on Christmas Day. The Pogues star suffered from serious health issues for some time and had been receiving treatment in hospital for months after contracting encephalitis, a condition which affects the brain.

The Pogues frontman was discharged from hospital in November, celebrating his and Victoria's fifth wedding anniversary at home before tragically dying "peacefully" days later. Shane left behind a £4million fortune and raked in between £216,000 and £260,000 a year in royalties from the 1988 festive classic, Fairytale of New York.

The musician had been receiving hospital treatment since June. On November 30, The Pogues star's widow announced her beloved husband's death in a statement which read: "I don’t know how to say this so I am just going to say it. "

She continued: "Shane who will always be the light that I hold before me and the measure of my dreams and the love of my life and the most beautiful soul and beautiful angel and the sun and the moon and the start and end of everything that I hold dear has gone to be with Jesus and Mary and his beautiful mother Therese. I am blessed beyond words to have met him and to have loved him and to have been so endlessly and unconditionally loved by him and to have had so many years of life and love and joy and fun and laughter and so many adventures. There’s no way to describe the loss that I am feeling and the longing for just one more of his smiles that lit up my world."

"Thank you thank you thank you thank you for your presence in this world you made it so very bright and you gave so much joy to so many people with your heart and soul and your music. You will live in my heart forever. Rave on in the garden all wet with rain that you loved so much You meant the world to me," she added.
