Lufthansa is suspending flights from Liverpool John Lennon Airport early next year, in a blow for holidaymakers.

The airline currently operates flights between the UK city and Frankfurt in Germany, but will be suspending the route from February. The move comes due to a lack of plane availability, amongst ongoing maintenance on its fleet reports the Liverpool Echo.

A Liverpool John Lennon Airport spokesperson said: "We are naturally very disappointed to hear of Lufthansa’s decision to suspend their Frankfurt service from Liverpool, particularly since the route was performing well and steadily growing in line with forecasts and we will continue to work with Lufthansa to secure the return of this important link at the earliest opportunity, once their availability of aircraft issues have been resolved.

"This route is strategically important for the City Region due to the global connectivity it brings and we will continue to explore opportunities to better connect the City Region."

The airline has been running the popular Liverpool-Frankfurt route since May 2022. It still operates a number of other direct flights to Frankfurt from the UK, including airports such as London City, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and Newcastle. Other airlines that also offer direct Frankfurt flights include British Airways and Ryanair.

On the Lufthansa website, it's possible to book flights through to January 2024 from Liverpool to the German city. From February to August there are no flight options, but you can find fares from £113 from September although it's not clear if this is an indication that the flights could resume during the autumn months.

On social media, some users have claimed that they have received notice that their flights over the summer months to Frankfurt have been cancelled. If an airline cancels your flight, you are entitled to a full refund. You may be offered options such as alternative flights or vouchers which you can accept, but you can have the refund if that's your preferred option.

Frankfurt was recently named one of the world's best 100 cities in rankings that looked at factors including economics, tourism, attractiveness, health and safety, and sustainability. Although it's predominantly a city that's popular with business travellers, there's plenty to explore for leisure too thanks to the plethora of museums, restaurants and historic buildings. It can also be a great base if you're planning to explore the gorgeous Rhine valley. (In fact, the Rhine was recently named as one of the world's best river cruise destinations!).
