Disney fans won't have to wait too long to watch Wish at home

Wish is currently enchanting cinema audiences as part of Disney's 100th anniversary celebration, and pretty soon fans will be able to enjoy it from the comfort of their homes on Disney Plus.

Helmed by directors Chris Buck (Frozen) and Fawn Veerasunthorn (Raya and the Last Dragon), the film tells the tale of 17-year-old Asha who lives on the Mediterranean island of Rosas. There she clings tightly to dreams of becoming the apprentice to King Magnífico, but the seemingly benevolent wizard and ruler is full of secrets that make even the most loyal of citizens question their allegiance.

One day Asha utters a wish of such potency that it resonates with a cosmic force – a little ball of boundless energy named Star who helps her embark on a mission to rescue her kingdom from the King's clutches. Together, they aim to show that when when the will of one brave human connects with the magic of the stars, incredible things can happen.

Ariana DeBose, an Academy Award winner for West Side Story, lends her voice to the character of Asha, while Chris Pine adds a melodic touch as the voice of King Magnífico. Wish promises a timeless Disney adventure, featuring new musical compositions, talking animals, and nostalgic nods to the studio's illustrious history.

But the film currently has a rather average 5.9 rating on IMDb, with many deeming it unlikely to live long in the memory unlike, say, fellow Disney stablemates such as Encanto or Elemental.

User Sleepin_Dragon was particularly unimpressed with the film's 'generic story', describing it as feeling "like they'd borrowed bits of Disney classics, and bolted them together as a kind of eco friendly Frankenstein. It doesn't manage to spark into life; arguably the most forgettable Disney characters to date."

Lepidopterous was equally damning, posting: "The plot is beat-by-beat, the villain is pure formula and paper-thin, and they don't invest in any running gags or in enriching any side characters. It's as if they had to reach a deadline so put in the minimal effort necessary to get it finished, which left us with a hollow movie devoid of any magic, held together only by its mind-numbingly predictable narrative."

Mishahaynie was far more positive, stating: "It's a good, clean, wholesome, and emotional family film that kids and everyone will enjoy, with meaningful and important messages about being honest with your dreams and never giving up on what you truly wish to become and more! Definitely check it out this holiday season!"

When will Wish be on Disney Plus?

For those eagerly anticipating the magic on their own screens, the release date of Wish on Disney Plus is yet to be officially announced. But using recent patterns from the House of Mouse, the movie is likely to hit the streaming platform around February 7, 2024, following an initial theatrical run of at least 45 days. Typically, Disney movies become available for rent or to buy digitally shortly after this period, and then, about a month later, they find their way to the streaming platform.

However, it's worth noting that Disney's chief creative officer Jennifer Lee mentioned in June this year that Wish is expected to enjoy a 'long run' in cinemas, possibly tied to the grand celebration of Disney's 100th anniversary. This could potentially alter the usual release pattern.

As is customary, once Wish becomes available digitally, viewers in the UK can rent or buy it from platforms such as Prime Video, iTunes, Microsoft Store, and others.
