Man Utd star backs Erik ten Hag's version of events after Bayern Munich loss

Diogo Dalot has conceded that Manchester United 's early exit from Europe is not good enough - but insisted their performance against Bayern Munich did not warrant defeat.

The Red Devils headed into Tuesday night's do-or-die Champions League clash knowing that only a win would give them a chance of progression, but they were also reliant on results elsewhere. Their elimination was confirmed courtesy of their 1-0 loss against Bayern and FC Copenhagen's victory over Galatasaray.

United's failure to progress past the group stage will only increase the pressure on Erik ten Hag, who now faces a crucial fixture away to arch-rivals Liverpool on Sunday. But the Dutchman insisted United deserved more for their endeavours against Bayern Munich.

Speaking post-match, he said: "We didn't lose it [the Champions League campaign] today. We had some good performances, but we made some mistakes, individual errors from players. In the end, it's not good enough, but I think today, the performance was very good, and we didn't deserve to lose.

"That’s clear [no depth on the bench]. A big compliment to the team against this good Bayern side. We needed energy from the bench. The options on the front line were limited."

Dalot was one of the players to front up after the match and the Portuguese full-back backed Ten Hag's version of events. His comments come at a time where reports of unrest in the United dressing room have been rife in the wake of United's poor form.

Dalot told Manutd.com : "We cannot concede so many goals that we conceded in this group stage. It’s just not good enough. We’re obviously sad. But, at the same time, we just have to realise that this is not the standard that we want to set for this club and for us. So we have to get better."

He added: "We came here today to win the game. We knew that that was the only result that we wanted. I think we did enough to win the game. We played well, especially first half. We were in control.

"I think we showed composure with the ball, good pressing as well. I think we were compact. We made it difficult for them. This is how we should approach every game, so this is the kind of standard that we want to set for the rest of the games."
