The New York Jets kept their slim playoff hopes alive and Aaron Rodgers still has a chance to play again this season.

The NFL legend has been out of action since his debut in September after tearing his Achilles, and his recovery appears to be on track.

The fact there is a possibility he can return from such a serious injury so early is remarkable, and that may be as early as this coming weekend against the Miami Dolphins. The 2011 Super Bowl winner was on the sidelines as he watched his team battle the Houston Texans on Sunday in Week 14.

When asked if this could come to fruition, Jets coach Robert Saleh said: “He is in rehab, so I really don’t have an answer for you on that one. Like I said before, I wouldn’t hold my breath.” Whether Rodgers makes his return sooner or later, he is working hard to get back to to full fitness, while under pressure quarterback Zach Wilson has struggled to be an adequate replacement this season.

After being benched for two weeks, Wilson was restored to the starting lineup for Sunday’s game against the Texans and produced arguably his best performance in a Jets uniform. Despite a poor first half in which both teams failed to score, Wilson led the Jets to a rampant second-half display.

A fumble from the 24-year-old set up the Texans’ only touchdown of the game, but he raised his game and ended the contest with 27/36 passes completed for 301 yards and two touchdown passes. This helped the Jets defeat the Texans 30-6 and record just their fifth win of the season. Post-game, Wilson was delighted and somewhat relieved.

"The three years here have been challenging," the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft said. "I think what matters is focusing on what really matters, keeping my circle tight and knowing the guys that matter -- in the locker room -- they got my back. I love this game. I love to compete. I love the thrill of making big throws and winning games. It's exciting when we're able to do that as a unit. It makes it easy to ignore the noise when you do.

"The flow of play today was there, I can't say it's like that a lot in my career. Whatever we're searching for, it's just playing ball, converting passes, Hack (offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett) called a great game." Coach Saleh, who raised some eyebrows when Wilson was reinserted into the starting eleven, was delighted with the performance of his quarterback.

"His best game as a professional," he said after the franchise ended their five-game losing streak. "He made things happen. I thought he was outstanding today." The Texans were dealt a huge blow when rookie quarterback CJ Stroud suffered a head injury after he was taken down by Jets defensive tackle Quinnen Williams.

He was subsequently placed in the NFL's concussion protocol, while wide receiver Nico Collins suffered a calf injury in the first quarter. "Yeah, on the hit with C.J., we got to block it better," Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans said after the game. "We can't allow them to get back to our quarterback. We have to block it better up front."
