There was little doubt in the mind of either Jamie Carragher or Roy Keane when it came to who has been Manchester United's biggest under-performer this season.

While some would argue there are a fair few to choose from amid a poor start to the campaign, both Carragher and Keane identified goalkeeper Andre Onana as the biggest disappointment so far. United parted ways with £47million in the summer to land the Cameroon international's signature and pry him away from Ajax.

Onana has hardly hit the ground running between the sticks, with a series of high-profile errors leaving many questioning the decision to sign him in the first place. Carragher and Keane were both firm in their stance that the 27-year-old has drastically underwhelmed this term.

Carragher actually identified another goalkeeper when analysing who could take the title for biggest disappointment in Arsenal loanee David Raya, who has endured a similarly difficult start to life at the Emirates. Speaking to the Overlap's Stick to Football podcast, the Liverpool legend did not hold back.

"The biggest disappointments in the Premier League so far this season would be the two goalkeepers at Manchester United and Arsenal [Andre Onana and David Raya]," Carragher claimed. "They’ve been quite poor after coming in as 'improvements' from the previous keepers, and it’s almost stayed the same or even gone backwards with them coming in."

United legend Keane echoed a similar sentiment, though chose to focus solely on Onana. He added: "The biggest disappointment has to be Andre Onana. I think Manchester United were right to get rid of David de Gea, but for the club to have brought someone else in and for him to be struggling."

Amid all of the criticism, Ten Hag did take the step of publicly defending his goalkeeper earlier on this month following a poor performance away at Galatasaray. "If you analyse it well then you see he is the second-best goalkeeper in the Premier League based on stats, so his expected defending goals is the second best in the Premier League," the United boss explained.

"He's doing well. Also, he knows that in the Champions League he makes some mistakes but all over you see the first five months he is doing particularly well."

Onana's better performances have come in the Premier League, but form has eluded him in the Champions League so far. Considering the amount of money invested in the shot-stopper, it is likely that United stick with him for the long haul, regardless of the assessment of Carragher and Keane.
