A lesser-known ski resort has been hailed as a 'fantastic' option for families, especially with kids who may be going on their first ski holidays.

Austria is already a hit with those wanting to make the most of the snowy season, but if you're a beginner or trying to stick to a budget then you may want to consider a holiday in Obergurgl.

Boasting an altitude of up to 3,030 metres, it's often one of the first resorts to open for the season - in fact earlier this year it was tipped as one of the ski resorts with the best chance of snow this winter, and the season has already opened. It's running until April 21, 2024, meaning there's ample time to book a break whether you're tied to school holidays or not.

Obergurgl boasts 112km of slopes so there really is something for all abilities - and impressively, a high number of its hotels and and chalets are right on the slopes so you can hit the slopes almost immediately when you set off in the mornings.

Skyscanner's Laura Lindsay revealed that the Austrian resort is her top recommendation for Brits looking for ski breaks on a budget, or who are taking their children skiing for the first time.

The site's Destinations & Trends Expert explained: "If this is the case, then I’d recommend Obergurgl in Austria. It’s a fantastic resort for beginners. The village is around 2,000 metres above sea level, so it generally has plenty of snow, and there are lots of long blue slopes for kids to get started on. There are 24 ski lifts on this resort. Also, if you want to leave the kids in safe hands while you go skiing, Esprit Ski offers excellent childcare services. One-day lift passes are from €59.50 for adults and from €33 for children."

If you're looking for multi-day passes, we found some which offered impressive access to most of the slopes from around £355 for five days of skiing too. However, what's great about Obergurgl is that there's plenty to do if there's a day where you don't fancy hitting the slopes. For example, you could treat yourself to a relaxing day at one of its countless thermal spas, or take the kids to Europe's highest motorbike museum for a day out with a difference.

There are also plenty of toboggans and sleds to hire for a fun afternoon in the sun, if you're looking to pass the time before meeting up with others for that well-deserved après-ski. Speaking of which, the Austrian resort delivers with plenty of brilliant bars and clubs for those who want a bit of nightlife! Most of the action tends to be at the bottom of the pistes, where you'll find the restaurants and cafes serving everything from cold beers to warming mulled wines.

If you're feeling tempted to book a break, there are plenty of firms that offer packages to the resort including the likes of Inghams, Crystal Ski and Iglu Ski. You can also find out more about the resort on gurgl.com.
