I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here viewers were left outraged by the House of Lords discussion on Saturday night's episode of the ITV reality series, with many slamming it as insensitive amid the cost of living crisis.

Fans were shocked after Nigel Farage explained to campmates Fred Sirieux and Frankie Dettori what goes on inside the UK parliament house, which consists of 785 peers who debate and vote on new laws. It has been widely criticized in the past for being undemocratic, however, as the majority of its members - known as peers - are appointed by the monarch on the advice of the Prime Minister.

It was Farage's discussion of his friendship with former US President Donald Trump which led to backlash from I'm A Celebrity viewers after the ex-Ukip leader noted that, unlike their American equivalent, the British Prime Minister doesn't have the power to pardon individuals.

"They can bestow honours," First Dates star Fred Sirieux replied, to which Farage responded: "Honours he can give, yeah." The French maitre d'hotel then said, "Being in the House of Lords, you get a pay cheque every year," which led Farage to brusquely correct him. "Well you don't, you get a cheque every day," the 59-year-old explained. "You get £300 a day for turning up."

After Frankie joked that £300 would just about cover lunch for a person in the House of Lords, Farage shared one of his own experiences of dining in the elite chamber. "I went to the House of Lords about two months ago, a guy I served with in the late 90s and early 00s in Brussels invited me to lunch. I said, 'What's it like here?' He said, 'It's the best retirement home in the country,'" the Brexit Party founder recalled.

"He said, 'I get a taxi in every morning, I do a little paperwork, sign in for the money, go for lunch in the subsidised dining room' and it's old fashioned English food, it's roast, it's really cheap. They go into the House of Lords at 2.30pm for the opening of debates or whatever it is and then p*** off home, that's it done!"

Farage's admission has led to uproar amongst viewers, many of whom have condemned the House of Lords' system as grossly unfair in light of the current economic climate.

"Still can’t get over the MP’s paying 5p for toast in the House Of Lords," one person admitted, while another said, "I’m sorry what, all them struggling people and families struggling to feed their kids and they are getting 5p toast and £300 a day just to turn up sign in n go eat?! Wtf is this country honestly !!"

"Subsidised food and 5p toast for the House of Lords. Meanwhile, I’m paying almost £10 a day for a sandwich, crisps and a drink working in an NHS hospital," a third person said, while a fourth sarcastically wrote: "Free school meals and benefits are the problem whilst those in the house of lords are getting paid to turn up and get toast for 5p ... sound." This outrage was echoed by another furious person, who posted, "A slide of toast is 5p AND they get £300 just for showing up?! No wonder the country’s corrupt."
