Gwyneth Paltrow has admitted she has been suffering from a "roller coaster" of symptoms as she's "in the thick of perimenopause".

The 51-year-old believed she was "losing her mind" after first experiencing symptoms and has suggested ways other women might alleviate their own troubles. Perimenopause refers to the transition before menopause, when hormones fluctuate and women can experience a range of symptoms. These include hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, insomnia and irregular periods.

Gwyneth explained: "I'm really in the thick of perimenopause, so it's quite a roller coaster and my best advice is that every woman really needs to contemplate what is the right way for her." She said she's been focusing on gut and liver health so that "excess hormones can be flushed out of the body".

The actress was 45 years old when she first started experiencing symptoms. However, she initially felt she was "losing her mind" because menopause is seen as a taboo topic and therefore not discussed too often.

She said she's glad that there has been a change in society, with people now starting to open up about menopause. Speaking to People, Gwyneth said there are "a lot of great options" now available for women.

She explained: "Whether it's HRT or different supplements, but I'm just glad everybody's talking about it because it used to be so full of shame and it's just another chapter for us. It's nothing to be hidden."

Gwyneth is happy that there is a "community" around menopause support and pointed to organisations such as Evernow and Stripes. She added that simply getting people talking about menopause can help women manage their symptoms and understand what's happening.

Gwyneth's comments come after she confessed that she's ready to "disappear from public life". After quitting Hollywood, she said that she wants to sell her lifestyle brand Goop and escape from the spotlight for good.

During an interview with Bustle, the businesswoman said: "I will literally disappear from public life. No one will ever see me again." She added: "I've always done independent films, I don't know. Money has never been my thing. It's never been my driver."
