In an initial statement, the family said: "To Bruce’s amazing supporters, as a family we wanted to share that our beloved Bruce has been experiencing some health issues and has recently been diagnosed with aphasia, which is impacting his cognitive abilities. As a result of this and with much consideration, Bruce is stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him."

The actor is surrounded by love, including by his ex and current wife. "I think it’s so hard to regulate sometimes how you’re feeling and I think sometimes caregivers feel so guilty, you know. God dare they look after themselves," Emma said in conversation with Teepa Snow, an occupational therapist and Founder and CEO of Positive Approach to Care. She continues to look after Bruce, but said on the Today Show that it is "hard to know" how aware Bruce is of his dementia.

Demi, who has been close with Bruce platonically following their divorce, has reportedly been a source of support for him. An insider told OK! Magazine: "Demi has been a rock for Bruce. She's conveyed to both him and Emma that she's fully committed, being there 24/7 throughout this challenging period."
