Liverpool players and fans are set to be gifted an early Christmas present when they take on arch-rivals Manchester United on December 17.

The same Premier League fixture last season signified a remarkable day for Jurgen Klopp and co, with the hosts demolishing United 7-0 in a game that will go down in folklore at Anfield. And now Erik ten Hag's side will not have to cope with the attacking prowess of Liverpool, but also more of their fans than expected as well.

The upper tier of the Anfield Road stand will be at least half-full, meaning an increased attendance of around 56,000. Recent attendances have hovered around the 50,000 mark following numerous delays since the renovation work began.

According to The Athletic , the increase will be subject to a safety certificate being granted by Liverpool City Council following a test event. And the news will be welcomed by fans of the Reds, with many forced to relinquish their seats to games this season despite purchasing tickets.

The new stand was initially due to open in August but the project was thrown into jeopardy after contractor Buckingham Group went into administration. Rayner Rowen Construction took over and are now set to complete the work earlier than originally expected.

Just three days after United visit, Liverpool host West Ham in the Carabao Cup. And then on December 23, Anfield will be in use again when Klopp's side play Arsenal in the Premier League.

When the stand is fully complete the capacity will rise to 61,000. That will place Liverpool third in terms of venues in the top-flight, with only Tottenham and United themselves permitting more fans.

The Reds have just two home games to fulfil before December 17: a Europa League tie against LASK on November 30, three days before they host Fulham, followed by three straight away trips.

Klopp's immediate focus, however, will be on the controversial Saturday lunchtime kick-off against Manchester City this weekend. His side head to the champions lying in second place and just a point off Pep Guardiola's men.
