Deal or No Deal's Stephen Mulhern makes awkward blunder as contestant cringes

Stephen Mulher sparked hoots of laughter and plenty of hilarity when he compared a Deal Or No Deal contestant to a dog during an on-air blunder.

The 46-year-old TV host has taken the reigns of the box opening game show - which originally ran from 2005 until 2016 and was hosted by 74-year-old Noel Edmonds. This year, ITV received the series with Stephen as the new host ready to take calls from the bankers and to offer cash prize deals to the contestants - who have the chance to accept or reject the prize funds.

On Thursday, a contestant named Katie was called to take on the banker and Stephen began her Deal Or No Deal Journey with some gentle banter. The TV star asked: “Tell me, did you used to watch the show when it was on with Noel [Edmonds]?"

Katie confirmed she did, smiling: “Religiously, yeah. I used to watch it with my nan all the time!" This then prompted Stephen to declare: “We've got a picture of you with your nan," only for an image of Katie's grandmother sitting with a dog on her lap to appear on screens.

The mix-up prompted immediate screams of laughter from the entertained live studio audience, while Katie pointed out the error, saying: "Oh that's not me, I think that's the dog!" Stephen then seized the opportunity to poke fun at his own mistake, saying: "I'll tell you what, you look great there Katie!"

And joining in on the hilarity, Katie joked: "I just had a hair cut so I was looking pretty good!" Stephen then asked: "So who's dog is that?" And Katie replied: "My dog. She's called Binky." Stephen then pressed on with his line of questioning, asking: "If you used to watch Deal Or No Deal with your nan, this must be extra special to actually be on the show?"

Katie confirmed that she was, indeed, thrilled to be on a TV show that she had previously watched. She said: "Yeah, she would be over the moon. I think it's a massive bucket list. I wanted to do the show since I was younger."

The mildly amusing exchange proved to be a talking point for many ITV viewers who flooded social media to marvel at the humorous moment. One X user wrote: "'We've got a picture of you with your nan' - awkward!" Another joked: "That picture is uncanny!" While a further viewer simply typed: "LOL STEPHEN!"

The return of Deal or No Deal was announced by ITV back in March - with Stephen unmasked as the new host. He declared at the time: “Wow what an opportunity, I’m beyond excited to be hosting the brand-new series. I’ve always been such a huge fan of the show, so much so, I’ve been practising at home with small cereal boxes! It looks so simple but it's an incredibly compelling game for both those playing and the viewers watching at home. It’s one of the greatest shows of all time and to be the new host is an honour! I can’t wait to get started”

The show began to air this week - and the magician has provoked something of a mixed response from viewers. One X user slammed his presenting skills, writing damningly: "Me assuming you couldn't find anyone more objectionable than Noel Edmonds to host the new series of #DealOrNoDeal only to see it's now Stephen Mulhern." But others loved his new role, with one fan typing: "Stephen Mulhern is so much better than Noel Edmonds on #DealOrNoDeal."
