Air fryers have surged in popularity over the last few years as an affordable and healthy way of making food - but they can be a pain to clean.

When it comes to cooking in smaller quantities, air fryers can be really cost-effective, and the appliance is also a healthier alternative to frying as it uses less oil. They are quick to use, and the most time-consuming part is actually cleaning them - as there's often a greasy build-up inside.

And because of its size and awkward layout, they can be difficult to scrub. But who wants to spend lots of time and effort cleaning up after you've had a lovely meal? No one, but the good news is there's a way to clean it while you eat - and people are only just discvoering it.

A foodie looking for cleaning hacks online for his trusty gadget hit the jackpot when a Reddit user shared their genius trick, which means you can just leave it to self-clean while you munch on your grub. Taking to the popular forum, they wrote: "Hi, I was wondering if anybody knows any cleaning hacks, because I have been told that cleaning air fryers can be notoriously difficult."

The most popular reply came from a forum user who suggested getting it to clean itself while you eat. They wrote on Reddit: "What type do you have? I have the bucket style. After I cook while it is warm, put warm water and soap in the bucket. Let sit while you eat. By the time you finish eating, use a sponge to clean. Problem solved."

A second person shared a similar sentiment, saying: "Put a little dish soap in the basket, if you have a removable tray with the grate holes leave it in. Add hot water as far as you can see dirt or oil on the sides. Let it sit this way 10-20 minutes. Take a microfibre cloth or very soft sponge, gently clear sides and bottom with the water still in it. Remove tray, wipe with cloth or soft sponge. Rinse completely with cold water and you should be good to go."

We'd recommend checking the instructions before you give it a go though, just in case you pour water somewhere it shouldn't go. Giving your air fryer a quick clean after every use is great practice, but a deep clean doesn't have to happen quite as regularly. However, this will depend on how often you use it.

And while we have your attention, we have another hack that keeps your air fryer looking squeaky clean. Mrs Hinch provided a top tip to save you rinsing out the appliance every day. Sophie Hinchliffe, an influencer from Essex, revealed she lines her air fryer with baking parchment. By doing this, she can lift them out after cooking.

Most of the mess goes on the baking liners instead of getting on her appliance. The 33-year-old told her 4.7 million followers: "(Here's my) air fryer – I don't know what I did before I got this guys, it's so good. I bought one because my cousin has one and she said it's amazing. So I got the same one as her."

Sophie pointed to the parchment paper and added: "These are from Amazon – baking liners – and I use them to keep it quite clean inside. Brilliant little hack."
