Sir Jim Ratcliffe has shaken up the structure of his cycling team as he prepares to start an overhaul at Manchester United.

The British billionaire is closing in on a deal to buy a 25 percent stake in the Premier League giants. Once that is completed, he will assume responsibility for all football-related matters at Old Trafford, with a large amount of changes expected to be made.

Richard Arnold has already left his position as chief executive, with Ratcliffe expected to bring in his own replacement. Football director John Murtough is also likely to be moved on amid a dreadful start to the season for Erik ten Hag's side.

It is not only at United where Ratcliffe is making changes though, he is also overhauling the management structure at Ineos Grenadiers. According to the Daily Telegraph, Rod Ellingworth has resigned from his post as deputy team principal of the cycling squad.

Ellingworth is one of the founders of the team, having been part of the original management group when it was launched as Team Sky in 2009. The reasons for his exit are unclear, with the 51-year-old having been in day-to-day charge of the team.

He did not have the final say on transfers or strategy though, with rumours of tensions at Ineos having surfaced in recent months. There were several high-profile exits last season, with Tao Geoghegan Hart, Pavel Sivakov, Dani Martinez, and Ben Tulett all signing for rival teams.

Multiple world and Olympic champion Tom Pidcock, rising stars Josh Tarling and Carlos Rodriguez, as well as veteran Geraint Thomas all remain at the team though. It is said Ellingworth's exit has not been officially communicated to the riders.

The Grenadiers have been in the process of transition for a number of years, having last won the Tour de France in 2020. Dave Brailsford is currently Ineos' team principal, though he has been spending more time with Ratcliffe's other sporting interests.

He is expected to resign from his post to take up a role at United when Ratcliffe completes his buyout. Arnold announced his exit earlier this week, though he will stay at the club to aid with transitional processes until the end of December.

Patrick Stewart will take over as interim CEO, as well as continuing in his existing role of general counsel. A search for a permanent replacement will be started, with the current owners the Glazers paying tribute to Arnold for his work.

“I would like to thank Richard for his outstanding service to Manchester United over the past 16 years, and wish him all the best for his future endeavours," co-chairman Joel Glazer said when the news was announced.

"We are fortunate to be able to call on the deep knowledge and experience of Patrick Stewart to provide interim stability and continuity as we embark on a search for a new permanent CEO.”
