Martin Lewis takes back 'terrible' phrase about kids 'in the heat' of live show

Martin Lewis has apologised after using a 'terrible' phrase he used about children while presenting his live ITV show on Tuesday evening.

The blunder saw the financial expert make a distinction between adopted and non-adopted children as he advised parents on budgeting for the Christmas season. After noticing his error, Martin headed straight to X (formerly Twitter) to clarify his words.

"Just realised in the heat of live show I said 'adoptive children or your children' - terrible phrasing, sorry," he wrote, before adding, "Adopted children are of course your children." The 51-year-old, best known for advising Britain on how to manage their money since 2012, had been explaining the Child Trust Fund to viewers when the slip-up aired.

He then added, "Important tho [sic] to highlight many adopted children age 12 to 21's parent may not know they have a Child Trust Fund poss [sic] worth £1,000." Martin's followers were mostly understanding of the mistake, with many taking to the comment section of his post to reassure him they weren't annoyed.

"As a father to three adopted children, I wouldn’t be offended at all. The phrasing isn’t terrible, slightly clumsy at worst," one person wrote. "Thanks for the apology though and all the excellent advice and carry on with the good work!' Another added: "It was a slip of the tongue, you are forgiven, until you mentioned it I don't think anyone noticed."

"I'm adopted and choice of language around it can and does hurt, but like most adopted people I wouldn’t pick people up on it. So thanks for having some sensitivity - the correction is appreciated," a third person wrote.

This isn't the first time that Martin has recanted his words after slipping up on the job. The consumer rights guru apologised last year after swearing at Great Britain’s energy regulator over changes to its price cap on bills.

Ofgem confirmed its plans to update the energy price cap four times a year from October 2022 to allow it and consumers to adjust more quickly to unpredictable markets. Martin slammed the approach in a press call as a "f**king disgrace", however, and accused the regulator of selling consumers "down the river." He later took to X to apologize for his "emotional rant" and clarified that it was him, and not them, who overreacted.

"I should've behaved better. My ire's institutional not individual, its was inappropriate," he continued. "I have had good meetings with Ofgem for years, so I'm sorry this blew up (they were calm I wasn't)." Martin also apologised for 'losing it' in an interview with BBC Radio 5 in November 2021, after getting frustrated over the fight against paid scam adverts.
