Pete Doherty and Amy Winehouse had a rocky relationship with each other during the height of their fame.

The Libertines frontman became good friends with the Back to Black star in the 2000s but the duo often found themselves at the centre of headlines for all the wrong reasons. Pete and Amy became known for their party lifestyle, that ultimately took its toll on the pair. Pete was repeatedly arrested for drug offences and spent time in jail and rehab for his addictions.

He famously battled a heroin addiction and revealed he saw how drugs "drove Amy to the brink of madness". Amy tragically died aged just 27 due to alcohol poisoning. Following her death, Pete has opened up on their time together from their secret romance to her premonition about future children. Here is a look at their close bond...

Secret lovers

Before her tragic death in 2011, Amy had been close friends with Pete. However in 2012, the Libertines frontman revealed the pair had dated. "This is difficult for me to admit," he told the Mail On Sunday. "But, yes, it's true. Amy and I were lovers. I loved her then and, well, I still do today.

"But towards the end, as only lovers can, she became quite mean and cruel to me. She didn't suffer fools." The singer also admitted he did have concerns about Amy's health before her death aged just 27. He said: "She had such a big heart but she was physically small and increasingly frail and I never once saw her eat anything solid, just milkshakes. Well, we did lose her. There but for the grace of God go I, is what I say."

Pete penned a song for Amy called Flags from the Old Regime which was released as a single in March 2015. He described the track as "very slow and melodic" and all proceeds went to the Amy Winehouse Foundation. The Babyshambles star added he also has lots of "lovely" footage of times with Amy but had not been able to watch it back.

Haunting video

The duo sparked outrage back in 2008 when they filmed themselves playing with a litter of baby mice. The YouTube video that was titled 'Winemouse' saw both Amy and Pete picking up the animals and pretending to make them talk. It was believed the mice were just days old at the time and the Back to Black singer even sent a message to her then-incarcerated husband Blake Fielder-Civil.

“Blake please don’t divorce Amy, she loves you” she said in a mimicking ‘mouse’ voice as she held one rodent up to the camera. “Wait my big brother wants to say something” she added as Doherty held up another mouse. Amy went on: “If you divorce her you’ll have me to deal with. I’m only a day old but I know what love is." Pete sighed “Aw” before the film ended.

In another video, Amy and Pete could be seen playing with kittens. The clips sparked backlash from animal lovers and welfare experts who condemned the pair for their treatment of the baby mice. At the time a spokesperson for the RSCPA said the mice should not have been separated from their mother because they were far too young.

Handling young mice could also lead to them being killed by their own mother, as smell is "critical" for small rodents. However, a spokesman for Amy said the film was "harmless fun" and added: "As you can see the rodents are in no danger at all. Amy and Pete were just playing around."

Baby premonition

Pete met his wife Katia de Vidas in 2008 when she was commissioned to film his band, Babyshambles. The pair became friends and later fell in love, marrying in 2021. Pete and Katia welcomed their daughter Billie-May over the summer, as the singer admitted "fatherhood is different this time". He also has a son Astile with singer Lisa Moorish and another daughter, Aisling Erin with model Lindi Hingston.

Yet Amy had given a premonition years ahead of the Pete and Katia welcoming their first child together. Speaking to The Times, Katia revealed: "In the early days of filming, before we fell in love, we went to Amy Winehouse's home to pick up a guitar. As we were leaving she said, 'you two will get married and have babies'. Peter was laughing but I was thinking, 'not a chance. Are you crazy?' Amy, you were right."
