Bruno Fernandes has admitted that the mood was “not the best” as Manchester United were edged towards an early Champions League exit in Copenhagen.

The Red Devils’ fell to a 4-3 defeat in the Danish capital despite being both 2-0 and 3-2 ahead. Marcus Rashford ’s red card allowed Copenhagen back into the clash, while they scored two late goals to secure victory.

United’s latest defeat leaves them bottom of their Champions League group ahead of their final two matches away at Galatasaray before a home clash with Bayern Munich. Captain Fernandes - who had scored to put United ahead - spoke after the clash and gave an insight into the dressing room.

Asked how the players were feeling by the club’s official website, he replied: “Disappointment. I think for everything we did in the game, we could and should have gotten something.

“It is difficult at the moment, obviously, and the mood is not the best because I think we fought so hard with ten men that even from then on it was playing against a team that plays really well on the ball, and as a part of that, many decisions went against us.

"Today was a tough day but I think the team effort was good. We tried. We could have done some things better, but it was difficult for us from thirty minutes on, playing with one player less."

While their latest defeat leaves his side in an uncomfortable position ahead of their upcoming games against Galatasaray and Bayern Munich, Fernandes is still optimistic of United’s chances of progressing to the knockout stages.

"Even before this game, that was still the belief: to win the last three games of the group stage,” the Portuguese playmaker added. “And now we have to.

“We have to win them. If we want to stay in the Champions League and stay in the best competition, we have to win against the best.

"We have a really tough game away against Galatasaray and after we play against the top of the group. We want to win both, but now we have to focus on Luton, because it is going to be a tough game again. We need three points in the league and we need to get back to the winning track after this defeat."

Ahead of their decisive Champions League clashes, the Red Devils will be aiming to make it back-to-back wins in the Premier League. United take on newly-promoted Luton at Old Trafford before a showdown with Everton after the international break.
