Only the strongest RPG adventurers will survive in the as yet unannounced Honour mode, which fans believe may be added very soon.

Wildly successful fantasy RPG – and certified 2023 GOTY contender – Baldur’s Gate 3 may soon receive an all-new difficulty mode on PC and PS5 – similar to the one already present in Larian Studios other fan-favourite title Divinity: Original Sin 2. The still unannounced difficulty is said to be called Honour mode, and will seemingly challenge players to make it all the way through the main campaign with as many of their party members still alive as possible using just one save file. So fans of permadeath modes are in for a treat!

Honour mode’s existence in Baldur’s Gate 3 was first noticed by a group of Reddit sleuths, who took note of a new legendary achievement known as ‘Foehammer’ popping up in the GOG version of Larian Studios’ game. The description for which simply reads “complete the game in Honour mode” – except no mode of that name currently exists in any version of the game. This has still been enough to send diehard fans into a frenzy, though, with speculation running rampant as to when this new difficulty mode may arrive.

There’s every chance we could learn more about Baldur’s Gate 3’s Honour mode any day now, especially since Larian Studios has done a great job at updating the game regularly since launch. From reshaving cat pal His Majesty (not a joke) to providing crucial accessibility options, the patches and hotfixes continue to come thick and fast. One thing is for certain – now that an Honour mode has been mentioned in the GOG achievements list, this is something fans will be looking out for.

Hard as nails

Currently there are three different modes available to play in Baldur’s Gate 3: Explorer, Normal and Tactician. As the names suggest, each one gets progressively harder than the last, with Tactician difficulty giving enemies increased health and strategy, as well as making them harder to hit. As if that wasn’t enough, Tactician also increases the number of camp supplies needed to rest from 40 to 80, giving the most hardcore Baldur’s Gate 3 players a far tougher time.

Honour mode first came to the Enhanced Edition of the original Divinity: Original Sin, before getting integrated as part of the sequel at launch. In Divinity: Original Sin 2 it worked by only granting players one save slot, with the game also autosaving over this slot for you. This makes it incredibly tricky to progress through the campaign on your own terms, removing the ability for you to save scum and in effect reverse any decisions made.

It could be that Baldur’s Gate 3’s forthcoming version works similarly. However, fans in that revealing Reddit post are clearly hoping for much more. “Maybe it’s a mode where the game is always kept saved and you can’t reload,” said Reddit user Pira_, while others are already using what’s called the Tactician Plus mod to make the game more difficulty. Here’s hoping that, whatever it is, Baldur's Gate 3 Honour mode isn’t too much farther away.
