What should have been a fun night of trick or treating quickly turned into a real-life nightmare for one dismayed family, after a cruel woman refused to give their young son any sweets. According to his stunned mother, the lady in question had taken issue with part of the child's costume, and so decided against handing out any sweet treats.

The youngster, who is just five years old, currently has a bit of a cough and a runny nose, but as he had no fever, and was still expected to attend school that day, his parents didn't want him to miss out on all the spooky excitement of Halloween. Taking precautions, the careful parents made sure their little one wore a face mask while out trick or treating, helping to ensure he wouldn't spread any germs to others. Little did they know that somebody would take issue with their sensible precaution.

Taking to Reddit, the protective mother wrote: "We were having a good time, meeting friendly people and getting to have a fun family night. After going up to a neighbour's house, the homeowner made a point to yell at us parents (we were waiting for our kids on the sidewalk) that 'any child who is FORCED to wear a mask will NOT be receiving any candy!'

"My son is five years old. She decided not to give him candy, even though he was politely waiting with six other kids, because she didn't like that we put a mask on him. We told her that he had a cough, so that's why we had him wear it. She then yelled at us that we 'shouldn't have him out in public, then'."

She continued: "Fine, she doesn't have to like that we wear masks to try and keep our germs out of her face, but did she have to exclude my five-year-old, and make him sad, just because she doesn't agree with our views on masking up? I don't understand people. I can't imagine being so offended by someone else's choice/opinion- about something which has no effect on me, whatsoever - that I would go out of my way to make that person's kid feel bad about themselves. What did she get out of doing that to a small child, on a fun holiday?

"The worst thing my son did to her, was make her eyeballs look down upon a child wearing a fuzzy spider costume on their body and a cute bunny patterned mask on their face. That was enough for her to decide to potentially ruin his night and make him cry. Makes me want to go back and cough in her face…"

A number of fellow Reddit users completely understood the furious mum's outrage, with one person sympathising: "It's really sad that an adult would treat a child that way. That was really cruel. Those types of things can stay with a person, one of those negative child memories. Common decency has gone away."

Trying to shed light on the woman's mean reaction, another commented: "Not sure this helps, but there is a lot of anger, frustration, and discontent festering in our society. In a very roundabout and inappropriate way, this woman is telling you she is struggling. Happy people don't do these things. If you twist your mind into a pretzel, you can even start to feel a tinge of empathy for her and what she has become, but it's difficult."
