Police searching for ex BBC radio editor Aled Glynne Davies have found a body, after his former colleague Huw Edwards issued a plea.

The ex-BBC Radio Cymru editor, 65, disappeared after going for a walk in Cardiff, following a meal out on New Year's Eve.

Police today said a body has been recovered in Cardiff Bay, with his son confirming his dad's death.

Superintendent Michelle Conquer said: “We continue to support Aled’s family at this very sad time and our investigation continues to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.“

Aled's son, Gruffudd Glyn wrote on Twitter: “Thank you so much for all your efforts. We are heartbroken to announce that Dad was discovered in the river this morning.

Good Morning Britain presenter Susanna Reid was among those offering their condolences.

She wrote: “So so so sorry for your loss and for the agony of the wait to discover this terrible news [broken heart emoji].“

I'm A Celeb winner and Emmerdale star Danny Miller wrote: “I’m so sorry to read this. Sending the upmost love and condolences to your family [love heart emoji].“

Journalist Antonello Guerrera said he was "so sorry for your tragic loss" and sent his deepest condolences.

MP for Pontypridd & Taff Ely, Alex Davies- Jones, wrote: "I’m so sorry for your loss. Thoughts are with you and all the family. It’s clear from the outpouring you had how loved Dad was [love heart emoji]."

MP for Cardiff West, Kevin Brennan, told Gruffudd: "So very very sorry to read this – deepest sympathy and condolences to all the family."

Hundreds of people had joined the search for Aled after he was reported missing from his home in Pontcanna, having gone for a walk at 11.30pm, after retuning from a meal at 10.30pm. He left for the walk without his medication.

His family described Aled's disappearance as "very uncharacteristic" of him.

BBC broadcaster Huw Edwards urged people to check CCTV from their doorbells and security cameras in Cardiff, signing off “Diolch yn Fawr”, which is Welsh for thank you very much.

After today's tragic news, Huw shared a tribute to Aled, writing on Twitter: "Heartbreaking news. Aled was a journalist and broadcaster of rare ability. He was also a kind and generous man. Deepest sympathy to Afryl and the family. [Welsh flag emoji]"
