Panicking shoppers have stripped supermarket shelves bare ahead of the arrival of Storm Ciarán’s 90mph dangerous winds this week.

Forecasters warned very strong northwesterly winds could disrupt travel and cause structural damage while flying debris could be a danger to life. Roads, bridges and railway lines may also close while trains and planes are at risk of delays. The Met Office said there is also potential for large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties. Yellow warnings for wind and rain are already in place across parts of England, Scotland and Wales between Wednesday and Friday.

People across the UK have been warned of the risk of flooding of homes and businesses, as well as delays on the roads due to spray. In the Channel Islands, supplies are feared to run low as there will be no sailings for the next week of its three ships responsible for carrying freight from the UK or France.

A spokesman for the Co-op told ITV it is working to minimise disruption. They added: “We are aware of the expected forecasts and are taking all steps we can to mitigate any potential issues. Unfortunately, due to the expected forecast, we can expect disruptions to supply across both islands for goods being received. We would like to reassure shoppers steps are being taken to minimise any negative impact."

It comes as islanders have been told by the Government of Jersey to stay home on Thursday as a result of the approaching severe weather. It said in a statement: “Islanders are advised to stay at home on Thur 2 Nov due to the significant risks posed by Storm Ciarán. A decision has been made to close all Government schools on Thursday. Private schools and early years providers are being provided the same advice as GoJ schools and colleges. Islanders should only visit the hospital on Thursday 2 November if it is an emergency, or they have been contacted and expressly asked to attend. If patients have any questions or concerns, please contact their relevant department.

“Day centres will be closed and home births are suspended. The emergency department will be open as usual for life threatening or serious illnesses. Due to the severe weather warning, airport authorities have decided to close the airport to commercial operations on Thursday. The airport will remain open for emergency and medical flights, and will reopen on Friday after a visual inspection of the airport infrastructure.

“Passenger and freight ferry services are severely disrupted, Jersey Coastguard is advising Islanders to keep away from coastal areas, as there is a risk people could be swept out to sea from piers and seawalls. Boat owners are being reminded to secure their vessels appropriately.”

Guernsey also warned its airports, schools and waste collections will be suspended on Thursday when the brunt of the storm hits the island. Residents are also advised to stay at home.
