Sarah Ferguson's tribute to Matthew Perry as she recalls Friends cameo
Sarah Ferguson has paid a touching tribute to Matthew Perry and said it was “tragic” to lose him at such a young age.
The Friends star was found dead in the hot tub at his home in Los Angeles on Saturday afternoon. It is suspected the 54-year-old drowned, but his exact cause of death is yet to be revealed. Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, the Duchess of York – who had a cameo in Friends in The One With Ross’s Wedding in 1998 – shared a photo with the Friends cast including Matthew, who shot to fame as Chandler Bing in the hit Nineties sitcom.
She was also flanked by David Schwimmer (Ross), Courteney Cox (Monica), Jennifer Aniston (Rachel) and Matt LeBlanc (Joey) as she wrote: “I remember being thrilled to have met a natural talent, comedian and brilliant actor.” Fergie continued: “It is a tragedy to lose you so early in life, rest in peace dear Matthew .... you have given so much joy and laughter to many.” Fans were quick to comment underneath with one writing: “Beautiful words.”

Fans will remember the scene where Joey goes sightseeing around the capital and bumps into none other than the Duchess of York outside Buckingham Palace. Showing Chandler and Monica a video message from the former royal on his camera afterwards, Joey says: “Okay, so say hi to my friend and tell him you like my hat.”

When the camera pans down, it’s revealed to be Fergie and she says: “Hi Chandler” and waves. As Monica exclaims “Oh my God!” a pleased with himself Joey shouts: “It’s Fergie baby!” The clip ends with Fergie saying: “Joey says you don’t like his hat, but I think it’s kind of dashing.”
The world of showbiz and fans around the world have been also been paying tribute to Matthew following the news of his shock death over the weekend. In a statement his family said: “We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of our beloved son and brother. Matthew brought so much joy to the world, both as an actor and a friend. You all meant so much to him and we appreciate the tremendous outpouring of love.”
A source close to his co-star Lisa Kudrow, who played Phoebe in Friends, said Matthew’s death “did not seem real or fair to her or any of the gang”. They added: “Matthew was finally at peace with himself and was having the best year of his life. He was actively engaged in his sobriety. She is baffled on what caused his death.”
