Matthew Perry had shared cryptic Instagram posts, calling himself "Mattman" in the weeks leading up to his death.

The 54-year-old actor died on Saturday after being found unresponsive in his Los Angeles home. Just days before his death, in one Instagram post, Perry a shared an image of himself sat in his hot tub, where he reportedly drowned.

The post was captioned: "Oh, so warm water swirling around makes you feel good? I’m Mattman." Before that, Perry shared a video of the moon, captioned: "Do you understand what I'm trying to tell you? - I'm Mattman."

This was the sixth Instagram post relating to "Mattman". One image he shared showed a carved pumpkin with the Batman symbol. He also shared a video of what looks like three grapes, with the caption: "This is what I've had to eat today. I'm Mattman."

The first "Mattman" post he shared was of a red glowing bat symbol. The second post was of a screen which read: "Batman plays pickleball." The actor was a keen pickleball player and has previously spoke about his love for the sport. He apparently played the sport at least once a day and was reportedly out playing the game on Saturday before he returned home.

What is Mattman?

A source close to Perry, the actor was playing around with an idea that he had for a series when he was creating the "Mattman" Instagram posts. The source told People: "He was having fun." He had reportedly recently watched the 2022 Robert Pattinson version of Batman.

The source added that Perry was due to act in a new drama film which has been put on hold by the actor's strikes. He had just moved into his home which has recently undergone renovations.

They described Perry as "Incredibly happy" before his death. The series of Instagram posts were nothing more than the actor having a bit of fun, pointing to his real-life comedic character that he shared with beloved friends character Chandler Bing.

Perry has previously opened up about his struggles with addiction. He cited his co-star Jennifer Anniston as being the one to "save his life" after confronting him about his drinking on the Friends set. It has been reported there were no "illegal drugs" found at his home following his death, however authorities are said to have found anti-depressants, anti-anxiety drugs and a COPD drug at the residence.

Social media has been flooded with tributes to Perry following his death describing Perry as one of a kind. Tributes have included ex-girlfriend Gwyneth Paltrow who described the "magical summer" they shared together.
