Eddie Nketiah is better than Manchester United ’s big money striker Rasmus Hojlund, according to former Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood.

The Arsenal striker had an afternoon to remember against Sheffield United as he scored a stunning hat-trick in a 5-0 win. He rounded off his treble with a spectacular effort and leaves his record at five goals in 10 Premier League appearances this term.

His goalscoring display was a timely one for Arsenal, who are without the services of the injured Gabriel Jesus. Sherwood believes that Nketiah is unfortunate to have found himself behind the Brazilian in the pecking order and he would be starting for other sides in the Premier League - even United.

Speaking on Sky Sports after Arsenal’s win against Sheffield United, he said: “I feel sorry for Eddie because people always, even Arsenal fans, always asking questions about him and look at what he can’t do. I like to look at what they can do. He can play in a lot of teams. A lot of big teams.

“You’re telling me this boy couldn’t play for Man United at the moment, instead of [Rasmus] Hojlund? He’s an upgrade on Hojlund. They spent an awful lot of money on him. For me, he’s top drawer. I think he warrants playing for Arsenal at the top of the Premier League.

“[Gabriel] Jesus will help him out massively as well. We are always looking for something else and I think we should appreciate what we’ve got in front of our nose.

“That boy has come through the academy, he has had opportunities to leave, he didn’t want to leave the football club. He’s got a right to stay there and fight for his place.

“I think Mikel [Arteta] is recognising that the boy really wants to play for the club. He’s put the armband on there today with a match ball under his arm. What a proud moment for him and his family.”

Nketiah will be aiming to continue his positive form over the next weeks as the fixtures come thick and fast. The Gunners at first take on West Ham in a midweek Carabao Cup clash before clashing with Newcastle at St James’ Park next weekend.

Arsenal boss Arteta claimed he is expecting even more from the striker over the coming weeks as he continues to deputise for Jesus. Speaking in his post-match press conference, he said: “He’s a great player for Arsenal.

“He can be better, yes. And the best thing is the talent that he’s got, but especially his mentality is incredible. When he has that mentality with that talent, he’s going to get much better.”
