The NFL has confirmed Monday night's suspended Buffalo Bills vs Cincinnati Bengals game will not be continued this week. The highly-anticipated game was postponed during the first quarter after Bills safety Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest.

Hamlin made a routine tackle on Bengals player Tee Higgins, but took a heavy blow to the chest in doing so. He was able to get up, but immediately fell back to the floor as his heart went into cardiac arrest.

Paramedics were brought onto the field to care for Hamlin, and worked for six minutes to perform CPR and use a defibrillator to restart his heart. Hamlin was taken to the University of Cincinnati Hospital, where he remains in the intensive care unit in critical condition.

The game was postponed shortly thereafter, with some players going to the hospital to be with Hamlin and a number of fans waiting outside hoping for positive news.

The regular season schedule seems insignificant after the incident, but there remains the question of when the game will be resumed. On Tuesday night, the NFL confirmed that will not be this week.

The statement read: "The NFL continues to be in regular contact with the medical team caring for Damar Hamlin, and also the Bills and Bengals organisations and the NFL Players Association.

"After speaking with both teams and NFLPA leadership, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell informed the clubs today that the Bills-Bengals game will not be resumed this week.

"The NFL has made no decision regarding the possible resumption of the game at a later date. The league has not made any changes to the week 18 regular season schedule. We will continue to provide additional information as it becomes available."

The Bills released a statement around the same time, which read: "Damar Hamlin spent last night in the intensive care unit and remains there today in critical condition at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. We are grateful and thankful for the outpouring of support we have received thus far."
