Footage of a river filling up and then overflowing while Storm Babet rages across Scotland demonstrates the difference the hours of lashing rain has made to the area.

The clip, which shows 18 hours of the North Esk river sped up into an 11-second clip, was taken from a webcam at Gannochy Bridge in the village of Edzell. The river burst its banks close to the town of Brechin following the onslaught of rain.

Jill Scott, Brechin and Edzell councillor, said: "It's horrific. It's just absolutely horrendous. I've never seen anything like it. People are trapped. Some have been stuck there for hours. The boats are trying to get to them. They can't get to them because the current is too strong. There will be hundreds of houses flooded.

"It unbelievable. It's devastating. I don't know what the council's going to do to be honest - how many people they are going to have to rehome. People will have lost everything."

One resident, Kim Clark, told BBC Scotland News she defied the advice to evacuate as she could not bring herself to abandon her home. She said: "We’ve no longer got a river, it’s now in my garden and right into my house. The street is now the river. I’m waiting for the fire brigade to come and get me. They’re getting my elderly neighbour first. She was screaming in her bungalow. The water is right in my house. It’s come right up. I’ve lost everything."

Angus Council earlier this morning renewed its appeal for people to evacuate, it said: "We completely understand that it is very hard to leave your home but parts of Brechin, and increasingly other parts of Angus, are now only accessible via boat. Rescue crews are now dealing with around 100 calls from areas which were asked to evacuate yesterday evening."
