Under-fire New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has been told he could earn up to '$20 million' if he was to leave his post in favour of a new job as a TV analyst.

The team's veteran chief's legacy as one of the NFL's greatest figures is already secure after winning six Super Bowls during his 23 years with his current employers. However, the 71-year-old is facing significant criticism after the Patriots slumped to a 1-4 start to the season.

Between 2001 and 2019 he masterminded an all-conquering dynasty alongside legendary quarterback Tom Brady but the latter's departure has left a lasting impact. Times are bleak at Gillette Stadium currently, though, and the Patriots are experiencing their worst start to a season since 2000.

Their lack of success following the exit of Brady after the 2019 season has led to speculation that team owner Robert Kraft could call time on Belichick's tenure. Still, according to The Athletic, a lucrative new career in front of the camera could be open to the NFL icon if he is to leave.

In fact, the report contends that he could earn an eight-figure salary if he was to bow out from his Patriots reign and take a job as an analyst. The unnamed three agents are purported to have provided a ballpark figure of what Belichick could expect to earn in such a role.

The most conservative estimate put forward was an $8 to 10 million annual pay packet 'for the studio', with $12.5 to 15 million obtainable in the event of a 'bidding war'. Another source claimed he could stand to earn between $18 to 20 million, based on recent going rates.

They cite the example of Sean McVay, who was allegedly offered $20 million annually to work for Amazon as an analyst, as the reason for this estimate. A separate supposed agent also offered up a figure of $15 to 18 million a year due to Belichick's 'credibility and experience'.

To further strengthen his case, there is no doubting the regard the Patriots' de-facto general manager is held in within broadcasting circles either. In fact, former NFL tight end and current Fox sportscaster Greg Olsen has talked up Belichick's potential when it comes to turning his talents to TV.

He said: "I think Bill Belichick would be very fascinating as an analyst. Everyone knows about his press conferences, and we’ve seen the memes and laughed. He’s probably one of (my) favorite production meetings I ever had.

"I remember we had the Patriots my first year with FOX. I was like, ‘It’s Bill Belichick, make sure you don’t ask stupid questions.’ He couldn’t have been more engaging. He couldn’t have been more patient."

Olsen added: "He couldn’t have spent more time and been more interesting and thoughtful. I could have talked to him for three hours and not run out of things that I was interested in."
