Mason Greenwood has written a message to his followers on social media after scoring his first goal for Getafe.

Greenwood netted in Getafe’s 2-2 draw against Celta Vigo in La Liga on Sunday. His goal came in the 33rd minute to make it 2-1 to the away side after Borja Mayoral and Jonathan Bamba had exchanged strikes, Iago Aspas had missed a penalty for Celta and Getafe defender Domingos Duarte had been sent off for two yellow cards.

Celta pulled a goal back via Jorgen Strand Larsen, but they could not make their one-man advantage count. Greenwood’s goal was a simple one: a back-post tap-in into an empty net after a run and cross from his strike partner Mayoral.

He celebrated in an understated fashion, jogging to the corner flag before his team-mates came to join him. But it clearly meant a lot to him because it was his first goal in 627 days, since January 19, 2022 in Manchester United ’s 3-1 win over Burnley in the Premier League.

On Instagram, alongside a picture of him celebrating, he wrote: "Happy to score my first goal for @getafecf amazing team spirit to come away from the game with a point.” At the time of writing, his post has received over 1 million likes. Comments have been disabled by Greenwood.

Greenwood is on loan at Getafe until the end of the season after United decided he could no longer continue his career at Old Trafford. The 22-year-old was arrested in October last year and was subsequently charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Those charges were later dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service but United launched an internal investigation and determined all parties would be better served if Greenwood left the club. In a statement in August, United said: “Based on the evidence available to us, we have concluded that the material posted online did not provide a full picture and that Mason did not commit the offences in respect of which he was originally charged. That said, as Mason publicly acknowledges today, he has made mistakes which he is taking responsibility for.

“All those involved, including Mason, recognise the difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United. It has therefore been mutually agreed that it would be most appropriate for him to do so away from Old Trafford.”

Greenwood now has one goal in five appearances for Getafe, who sit 11th in La Liga with 10 points from nine games. He has received a mixed reaction in Spain, where Getafe fans gave him a huge welcome but rival teams have been reprimanded for taunting him.
