Erik ten Hag told his Manchester United players to target Brentford's defenders and continue switching play as he looked to salvage the contest at half-time on Saturday.

The Dutchman's advice ultimately helped them secure a late win over the Bees as Scott McTominay scored twice in injury time. Mathias Jensen had given the visitors the lead as United faced the prospect of a third straight league defeat at Old Trafford.

United pushed in the second-half with Ten Hag urging his team to keep their opponents running by better utilising the full-backs with Diogo Dalot on the right and Victor Lindelof on the left. The Portuguese star claimed after the win that their manager's tactics helped fatigue their opponents.

Dalot told The National UK on their half-time discussion: “We kept calm and we listened to what the manager said, trying to change a few things to find more spaces on the full-backs and trying to switch the game. They (Brentford) were really tired at the end and that shows we kept them running in their own half. And when it’s like that, it’s really difficult to get to the end of a game without being tired.

“We kept fighting and then when Scott came in with the energy and mentality he has, it shows we are a proper team and I am really happy for him. When you win a game like this you get to the dressing room excited and you can look at everybody you could see that they gave everything.”

United were facing a fifth defeat in eight games to begin their season, but the win means they just sit in the top half of the league. A host of players will now depart on international duty with the Red Devils taking on winless Sheffield United when they return to domestic action.

Ten Hag has called on his players to use Saturday's morale boosting success as a "turning point" having started his second season in charge poorly. “This must be the turning point. This reflects our season so far from the start of a game," he said. "It has to be that you believe and you see the fans believe: they are sticking together.

"They are behind us and they kept us going. But then we have a plan and that is the big compliment for the team. They kept the plan. They kept switching. And from there on in the right moment, you bring the ball in the box. And of course we had to make and bring more players in the box. And I think that's what we did the last 30 minutes and then you get rewarded in the end.”
