Student loses scholarship after video of her twerking at party surfaces

A student has had her scholarship withdrawn after a video of her twerking at a party was posted on social media.

Kaylee Timonet, 17, a senior at Walker High School in Walker, Louisiana, had earned herself a 4.0 GPA and had the nod for a scholarship but that all came crashing down after someone filmed her dancing at a homecoming after-party on September 30.

Kaylee was also removed as student government association president, according to local news blog Unfiltered with Kiran.

The teen girl's mum was also at the party. The video, which has since been deleted, reportedly showed the teen dancing with a friend. It was filmed by the DJ who played at the party, who performs under the name DJ Savage. He said: “How those kids were dancing was not bad. I have seen much worse. It was genuinely kids having fun.”

She was called into the principal's office on Tuesday morning and shown the video, she told Unfiltered. She was told off and told her application for the scholarship, which only goes to two students each year, was being withdrawn.

“All I was doing was having innocent fun. I was mortified,” the distraught teen said. Her mum Rachel later met with the principal and was furious she wasn't included in the earlier meeting.

Rachel was also furious that in a public school, the principal was reportedly questioning the girl's faith. Other pupils have rallied behind the teen selling T-shirts with slogans such as “Let the Girl Dance” and “I stand with Kaylee Timonet,” which have also been shared across social media.

Kaylee has said that the support from her mum and other students has helped her move past the humiliating incident. She said: "The video was not inappropriate whatsoever. I was just so afraid that people were going to hate me after that, so seeing that people were supporting me no matter what and seeing that my accomplishments were still noticed means the world."

DJ Savage said that Kaylee and her parents deserve an apology from the Walker High School administration. Mirror has reached out to Walker High’s Principal Jason St. Pierre for a response.
