Lad, 17, who wed pensioner after meeting at funeral pays tribute as she turns 80
A husband and wife with a 53-year age gap have just marked a huge milestone together - celebrating her 80th birthday with a slap-up meal and cake. Almeda and Gary Hardwick met in 2015 at Almeda’s son’s funeral and got engaged just two weeks later.
Gary, who was 17 when they first met, fell head over heels with Almeda, then 71, and the two began dating. Knowing that their relationship was serious from the beginning, the couple asked Gary's mum, Tammy, then 48, and his grandmother Carolyn, then 71, for their blessing.
The pair waited until Gary turned 18 before tying the knot on October 26, 2015, and then moved in together in Almeda's house with one of her grandsons, who is three years older than her new husband.
Reminiscing on when the pair first met, Almeda, says even before she spoke to Gary properly, she knew “he was The One”. Even though there is a significant age gap between the pair, the couple is more in love than ever and recently celebrated Almeda’s 80th birthday.
Sharing the special day on social media, Gary, who is now 26, called Almeda his ‘baby doll’ as he paid tribute to his partner, describing her as the ‘most amazing wife in the world’.

Next to a photo of the couple, he wrote: “Happy birthday to the most amazing wife in the world. Today is not only your day but most importantly, today is about celebrating the birth of such a wonderful & true woman with such a heart of gold.
“I’m the luckiest husband for every day that I get to wake up beside you. You make me the happiest man each and every day and I want to always make you the happiest woman.
“You deserve the world and until my last breath, I’ll work hard to give you that. All of my happiest moments are moments I share with you. I hope you have the best birthday ever today and I hope you enjoy all of your surprises my love.
“You’re truly the love of my lifetime and I love you with every beat of my heart. Here’s to celebrating my queen. Happy Birthday, baby doll.”
Sharing details of how he planned to spoil his wife, he went on: “Wine-infused salmon supper, really good wine, birthday cake, and surprises for my baby doll.”
The couple, who will soon be celebrating their seventh wedding anniversary, are often met with backlash over their 53-year age gap, however, they don’t let it worry them. Gary said: “Almeda is so young at heart that age never bothers us, we never really think about it. I just know that God answered my prayers that day she walked into my life.”
The couple regularly share their relationship on TikTok but revealed their account is often reported. They told their followers: "We had some of our content pulled down, it was reported for 'sexually explicit content.”
