Serial killer Levi Bellfield boasted that he falsely confessed to murdering Lin and Megan Russell in return for "cash and fun", it is alleged.

Bellfield – who murdered teenager Milly Dowler in 1996 – had given a statement in which he admitted killing Lin, 45, daughter Megan, six, and attempting to kill her sister Josie, nine. But he has written to Kent Police saying that he lied to get a £5,000 payment to a relative, it is reported. He claimed that he did it as he was “having a bit of fun” in jail with other cases.

His letter was passed by Kent Police to the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) which spent nearly six years examining the conviction of Michael Stone for the murders of Ms Russell, 45, and her six-year-old daughter, Megan who were found bludgeoned to death in Chillenden, Kent, on July 9, 1996.

Police have allegedly investigated and meetings Bellfield had in prison are said to tally with financial records. “Bellfield wrote that the things he said in the confession weren’t true. He said, ‘I’m just having a bit of fun and receiving some money in return for expenses’,” said a source, reported The Sun.

It is also understood that some of the evidence that Bellfield gave in his confession did not tally with what Josie Russell, who survived, had told police. Ex-Met Det Chief Insp Colin Sutton told the news outlet: “My view is that Bellfield knows he is in prison forever, that he has somehow joined up with Stone and offered to lie on his behalf for payment.”

Insiders had previously been reported as saying Bellfield had said he had written a formal letter to Kent Police to distance himself from the crime. This was after he had given a detailed admission to Stone’s solicitor Paul Bacon saying that he was behind the countryside killings.

And Ex-Chief Supt Kevin Moore who led a review into the hunt for Bellfield after he murdered Milly also said he feared he may have been trying to hog the limelight when he made the confessions. He said: “People like him aren’t normal. They love the limelight, the bravado. You have to ask if this is an opportunity to be in the headlines. Yes it’s right and proper that it’s looked into, but I would very much doubt the validity of his admission.”

The Mail reports that a CCRC spokesperson said: "Our team of experienced investigators thoroughly scrutinise any new evidence not heard at trial or on appeal. A conviction is only referred if the new evidence brings a real possibility a conviction being overturned. Anything irrelevant or untrue will be dismissed. Our door is open to anybody who has new information to offer in good faith on a potential miscarriage of justice."

A Kent Police spokesman added: "Kent Police can neither confirm nor deny whether or not investigations are being, or have been, carried out unless a person has been charged with a criminal offence."

The Mirror has contacted the CCRC and Kent Police for further comment.
